What did you catch? And where?

I'll be going down there tomorrow Sunday for some porcelain crabs (hopefully) and ghost shrimp and to bring back some too-big hermit crabs.

Gators found a shark egg. We caught tons of peppermint shrimp, blennies and small fish. Jetties across from the rainforest cafe.

I got a bunch of "ghost shrimp" and porcelain crabs at Airway Ln today. On the TX City Dike we got porcelain crabs and nerite snails. In the marshy area just before the causeway, we got some more shrimp and fiddler crabs - 2 males and a female.

We're going for peppermint shrimp this Friday night off the Seawall, if anybody wants to join us.

Note that what we commonly call "ghost shrimp" are more accurately described as "grass shrimp." They're appropriately named because they're found in the shallows, among the grass. True ghost shrimp are actually more related to crabs than shrimp, and within Texas retain a daily bag limit of 20 per person.

And to nitpick even further, half of our catch of shrimp is actually "brown shrimp" or what you may locally see/hear called "Gulf shrimp." It's the same shrimp that you can buy at the local fish market, and what you would buy as live bait.

Brown shrimp have incredibly long antennae and dark eyes, whereas grass shrimp have short antenna and white or clear eyes. Brown shrimp sift around in the substrate while grass shrimp tend to perch themselves higher in the water column and filter feed.

Brown shrimp can grow rather large and will develop that familiar (to fisherman) barb/rostrum on their head; grass shrimp will max out at about 2 inches and lack the barb.

;) :)
