if you have some algae growing in the tank it may cause the zoas to close up, especially if it ends up growing on the zoa itself. that's happened to me before and i'm still trying to fix it.

what do the white spots mean? the one you gave me are opening up (not all but the majority) and seem ok. i do notice small white spots on the "stalk" but i thought that was just pieces of substrate or something since they look ok and are open.

there are only like 2 or 3 stalks from the bunch that have 1 spot each. lol now u got me freakin 8O

Try giving them a better bit of flow.

As for white spots they can mean zoa pox, with zoa pox normally the whole colony does not open up and starts to disappear. If you notice some white spots I would not worry about it too much unless they colony looks bad.

Is that the only one that won't open? What are your water parameters? Is it new?

there is probably algae growing on the polyps themselves. i had that happen and the polyps wouldn't open. get a turkey baster or pipette and try to gently expel water over the polyps to get some of the junk out of them.

if that doesn't work, possibly a nice dip in some pH treated RO/DI water or some Lugol's solution. if there are any parasites on the polyps it should clear them out.
