I just got a new 10 gallon tank. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few pointers on what sort of things to put in there. I was really wanting a pulsating xenia coral and some sort of anemone. I also want several fish, shrimp, crabs or a few things of that nature. If anyone could please give me a few tips on what type of fish/anything else I might want/need to get I would appreciate it! Thankyou.

Might want to go with those tiny flower like anemones, I forgot thier names, but several people have them.

Inverts are going to better to get for your small tank that lots of fish, and fish you might think of fish that stay under 2.5 inches.

What you're trying to set up would be classified as a nano tank. You might want to try a board that specializes in nano tanks. Here's two.

www.nano-reef.com
www.nanotank.com

They will have more info on filters/pumps/powerheads/heaters, etc... that are appropriate for your tank. Like Narkon stated you really can't have very many fish in a 10gal tank, they simply need more room and produce enough waste that you're probably going to be limited to 1-2 small fish in a tank that size. Most of your shimp/crabs will be fine in that kind of tank. Do you want to try to keep corals? Anemones are mostly high-light creatures, there are some anemones that don't require light and they're beautiful, but they're not the type of anemones that clowfish host in if that's what you're wanting. If you are trying to get a clowfish/anemone pair, then you'll need to do some research as to what type of clown you want, then figure out what type of anemone they'll host in, then find out what the light requirements for that type of anemone is, and plan accordingly.

This board is a great place with good info as well.
There's also a nano forum on reefcentral.com

I wasnt nessesarily going for a full out reef tank. I was wanting to maybe get one or two of each though. The one fish I really wanted to get is a gold banded clownfish and perhaps a dwarf anglefish.

A 10 gal is too small for even the smallest of the dwarf angels. The gold-stripe maroon clown is one of the most agressive clowns and will probably have no problems fendind off the damsel. In fact the damsel may wonder what he did to make you mad enough to throw the bully in the tank with him.

Thats too bad about the anglefish, I really wanted a flame angel. Oh well, plenty of other fish in the sea. I have a green chromis in there right now helping to get it all cycled and whatnot but I dont think it will survive for long due to the fact that i have my tank in my apartment at college and im going home for a month. Oh well, I named him Kenny after the southpark character because hes most likely going to die. My room mate told me about this little cube of food that you can just hunk in the tank that will let him have something to eat for a while longer but who knows. Will the gold banded clownfish nip at any other fish i might get? What would you recommend for the other one or two fish that i could get?

Umm...This isn't really showing the kind of responsible attitude that's gonna make a salt water tank possible. You can't leave salt water tanks alone for a month and expect anything except algae to do well. Why not get your roomate to feed your fish, or pull it out and give it back to the store? A gold stripe maroon clown is one of more agressive clowns. They've been known to bite peoples hands to defend their territory/anemone. In a 10 gal tank it just depends on the size of the fish, and what other fish you try to keep with it. I wouldn't recommend ANY fish if you plan on leaving for extended periods of time without having someone to look after it for you while you're gone.

The only reason I got the chromis is because the people at the pet shop said it would help my tank to cycle. I dont plan on buying anything at all until after I get back. I just wanted to get everything up and running so it could be ready to put things in when I got back (after cleaning a lot of the algae of course and doing a water change). Im plenty responsible, I dont plan on spending all this money only to have everything I put in there die. If you have any more helpful hints i would appreciate it :)

Im just using a standard sort of filter...I think its made for 15 gallon tanks. I would like to upgrade it, any suggestions? Do they make these small refugiums or can you build them yourself? Im just using a standard 15W bulb as of now but after I get back to my apartment after the holidays I plan on getting a much strong one. Any suggestions in that area? I just went to a local hobby shop (they dont seem to really know much about anything).

well the rufugium i got game precut but i had to glue everything together. The kit came with the glue, baffles and of course the precut acrylic. if you want take every thing out of a common HOB filter and turn it into a refugium.

Probably. Even with the 500 my wife has a rio 50 in the tank as well for added current. However she has the 500's flow cut down as far as it'll go. Depending on your aquascaping you might be ok with the 500 and no additional powerheads.
