I have a nuissance crab that has gotten quite large and has already eaten 3 of my fish. He's about the size of a half dollar now and I've had no luck catching him. Anyone had any success with a DYI crab trap? Any idea on how to get rid of this guy before he does more damage would be helpful. I really don't want to tear all my rock out but if I have to oh well.

From doing some reading and taking the advice of a few people here on the board, I put a mayo jar in at a slant with the opening toward the rock the crab hung out in and then I bated it with some sinking flake food. It worked, though it took about three nights before I caught it. The crab could get in the jar but couldn't get out. My crab was about the size of yours, too....silver dollar size. He's now living in our FO tank.

KarenB has teh solution - I did the same and it works - i also caught them by putting shrimp in the tank at night and then waiting for the crab to come out and caught a few by hand. Larg shrimp  small hole , hungry crab and a quick hand and you'll have it :D

Well after many traps and no success, I planned on pulling out most of my rock during a water change to catch him. I was amazed but he was under the second rock I pulled up!!!! He is now swimming in Clear Lake. Time to get some replacement fish and start having some fun again.

I hope that was a local crab you released into clear lake :) Either that or it was "swimming with the fishes" before it went swimming with the fishes.
