I'm Currently using the Emperor 280 Mechanical filter for my 36G Reef Tank....What's a better mechanical filter than the 280 ? I already have ~46lbs of LR and a skimmer.

The 280 was working fine for over 1.5yr except that I dropped it recently while cleaning and made a crack along the side. Any help/info will help. Thanks again!! -don

U already got LR, which will provide soem bio-filtration.
The emperor 280 is a bio-wheel filter right?
How heavily loaded is your tank and how long has it been up?

You may not need to replace it, or you can just replace it with the same kind.

You don't need a large bio-wheel filter since you've already got LR in your tank.

I use and like the Emperor 400 without the biowheels.

I have been using one on my 75g reef for over 3 yrs. now. They also have 4 slots for a variety of media at the same time, like polyfilters, etc.

I also used a Emp. 400 on a 30g fresh, and have now moved it to my new 20g reef.

Just remove the biowheels and you have good flow and circulation into the tank, like a waterfall effect. I also like the flow adjuster so you can set it slower for night time.

The only filtration I've had on my 75g reef for 3 1/2 years is the Emperor 400 and a Prizm skimmer. (I also have live sand and live rock).

I think the Emp 400 and your skimmer would be great on your 36g.
