My 6 gallon has a big cyano problem. I only have shrimp and a goby in it. It has a 4 inch sand bed and a 6lb piece of LR. filer is carcoal and some kent phosphate remover. THe tank has a bunch of caluerpa in it. I use RO water from the fish store. what else can i do to get rid of it?

increase water flow and wait. it is cycling because it is new or something is wrong like you are feeding too much

Cut back on feeding - feed smaller amounts and only every other day. Your fish will be fine. Once the cyano is cleared you can increase the feeding gradually as long as you don't have another bloom. Also, if you aren't already, make sure you are dumping your skimate everyday.

Why have to dump the skimate everyday?

Narkon, one more thing you can do is to use Chemi-Clean. It kills red slime cyano bacteria overnight in most cases.

The little bottle of powder is expensive, but well worth it. I keep it on hand at all times.

Buy it online though because local retailers charge full tilt retail on it and you can get it online for half the price.

The Chemi-Clean will work, but it only temporarily solves the problem. You need to find the source of the problem or it will continually come back.

Skimmate is the nasty green stuff that collects in your skimmer as it skims the water. If you don't have a protein skimmer on the nano then you don't have skimmate to empty.

I would say something about never having had this but then that might cause me to have it, so I won't say anything about it.

I currently empty my skimmate about once or twice a week, depending if I want to clean it or not, for even in a week it is not 50% full.

emptying the skimmate is done to allow more to collect :) Basically the nasty green stuff is a collection of organic molecules from your water. Once you empty(and clean the collector!) it allows more to collect, keeping your tank water cleaner.

My skimmer seemed to do a better job(collecting skimmate faster) when I emptied it frequently and cleaned the collection cup. But that is just my experience.

Sorry, I should have read closer. I didn't notice that this was for a 6 gal nano - no wonder you don't have a skimmer.

You only actually need to dump a skimmer when it gets full - usually every 2-3 days so that it doesn't start to recirculate the gunk. But I find that if I just do it everyday, I'm less likely to forget. Dumping it too often won't cause a problem, but not dumping it enough can cause problems like cyano.

I just dont understand why the cyano is blooming so much. the main problem i have is the circulation. there isnt much movement at the bottom of the tank, i just didnt want to put a power head that moves 100 gph into such a small tank. I add a piece of LR with cyano to my 20 and it died within a day. no more cyano. guess ill be on a mini power head or adjustable power head search.
