Drained my tank on Monday evening including the sump and both overflows. Also pulled all the sand and caught all the snails I could find. Washed out the main tank with tap water and drained again.
Covered the tank and sump with towels and let it sit till today....HUGE MISTAKE!
Figured I would clean up the sump today so disconnected everything and didnt realize that there was about a 1/2" of water still in one of the overflows. When it drained it was a horrendous smell!!! After getting my stomach under control I found that there were several hundred dead snails just slightly larger than a grain of sand.
What I thought was fascinating was that there were still amphipods swimming around in water in the sump that was no deeper than their bodies. There was even a bristle worm still alive.
Once I got it all outside and let the house air out a little while it is now livable once again. Already missing my fish and corals!!!!
