how many of you use one, or would recommend one? and are you using a homemade one, Made with sulfur & aragonite?

I ask because my nitrates are up there even after a 40% water change... I do have a slow water refugium (which I thought would help reduce nitrate).. just wondering pros & cons on this DIY contraction?

There are several of the member have them. Mike have one and it work on his 300gal tank. I put one on my son tank 3 weeks ago. It's from Midwest Aquatics not DIY. Thing that you need to watch is your alk. Eugene and I believe Chuck still have his.

i have hank's denitrator. the downside is the low PH of the treated water. Mine puts out about 2 drops per second at the most and the pH is 7.5+. I really put the media in there with that in mind. It is 3/4 a liter of sulfur media, and about a gallon or more of coarse aragonite. the circulation loop does not work, but it did not take me long to get my nitrates from 20 to 0. I confimed on 2 different brands test kits. I believe the pH drop is caused by dissolved gasses that react to calcium, so if you can have the effluent drip into dry aragnite(kinda like a drip coffee filter process the way the grinds are in a filter) the gas should be released and your pH fixed, maybe aeration would work. I have seen chucks when it was on his 120. he made it from a single chamber calcium reactor and his system was beautiful.

I dont use a DIY one but i turn my calcium reactor into one.. My nitrate was always high and after listened to both of my friends ( chuck and Eugene) telling me about it, i got one and its doing a great job. Nitrate is at 0 now with about 100 fish in a tank. The bad thing is my soft corals dont like it.. :) They dont open that big anymore and some die. I think they like dirty water more..lol
Here is a pic of my denitrator:

Mike,
Increase the drip that way you have alittle nitrate in there. It not always good to have it at 0 from what I had read.
