I am a beginner with the whole salt water aquarium cycling etc. I set my reef ready tank up between 2-3 weeks ago. I put in some live sand as well as live rock. I have a refugium filter and vo lighting.

My problem is I have all this green stuff growing in it, it appears to be hair algae not the type I should be seeing. My roommate started scraping it off while I was at work today and now the water is green, the algae is not only on the sand but down in the sand.

What do I need to do???? I am at a total loss and any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
jpmc

Turn your lights off, and leave them off for the next month. With no light there should be less algae/diatom bloom problems. If you want to try to clear your water up, put in a couple powerheads pointed towards the overflow. Add a micron bag, or sponge where the overflow enters your fuge.

Brian,
Thanks for the suggestions, I already have the sponge in place so hopefully that will clear up the water. I'll take your suggestion of keeping the lights off.

No I didn't use tap water, I ran the water thru an RO/DI unit.
Thanks,
