I came home from work today and went upstairs to look at my tank. The lights were still off so I couldn't get a good look at it, but I noticed more sound than usual coming from the sump, and when I checked it out my skimmer was overflowing like crazy. I turned the tank's light on, and noticed that the color of the water seemed a little green, so I knew something must be wrong. That's when I looked back at my sump and saw a horrifying sight...

An jar of formula two garlic fish flakes (which was nearly full when I left for work) floating in the sump. I picked up the jar and my worst fears were confirmed...it was empty. My 3 year old daughter had emptied it into the sump earlier in the day while I was at work. I generally have the door child-proofed, but for the last week or so it was not.

My first reaction was to do a 50% water change and let the skimmer continue doing its work. I didn't have any saltwater prepared, so I called Jim @ Global Leader Aquatics (the new fish store in Humble) and he was more than willing to help. He had plenty of mixed saltwater to offer me, but first he tried to gather more info from me to see what the best solution would be. After talking with him, he was worried that if I simply did a large water change the food would gradually decompose and probably cause an ammonia spike that could kill my tank. I didn't see any flakes in the water, and I figured that they had all dissolved which was why my water was green and the skimmer was going crazy. I basically had 2 choices, do the water change and hope for the best, or take the whole tank down and move all the corals and fish to my frag tank, and the rocks to the QT tank I am in the process of setting up. That seemed like a hassle, but Jim convinced me it was the safest thing to do.

Anyway, he was absolutely right. After moving everything from my main tank into my frag tank and QT tank, I then decided to move the chaeto and rock rubble from the main tank's sump into my frag tank's sump. when I started messing with the sump I realized that all of the flake food had simply made it's way down to the bottom of the refugium portion of my sump.....there is literally a whole bed of fish food down there that I didn't realize was there (I only run the lights on my fuge at night, so I couldn't see it during the day). If I would have left everything in my tank I'm positive it would have crashed within a few days and I would have lost everything, so THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE JIM!

Everything is doing fine in the frag tank (it is extremely full). I had actually just ordered a custom tank to go in my wall in my office, and it's going to be ready this weekend, so I have decided not to set my existing tank up again. I am just going to sell it and move everything into my new setup once it's up and running. I avoided a huge disaster thanks to good advice from a great LFS.

By the way, yes, my daughter is still alive. She's way too cute to strangle... However, I did make every attempt to make her feel as guilty as possible by telling her she made the fish sick. She loves the fish...she's the only one of my 3 kids who does, so hopefully that will deter her from doing anything like this again. It's my fault anyways, I should have had it childproofed.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for a beautiful 45G setup I'll be posting it the BST forum shortly.

What a great hobby! :banghead2:

Wow that is horrible!

Honestly though if you saw all the food you could have siphoned it all out and did the water change and that would have kept it from spiking a great deal.....then add some carbon/seachem purigen to keep the parameters in order.

patiently awaiting the BST thread.....

IF I would have seen it.....which I wouldn't have. I never look in my fuge, it's only lit at night and it's too dark to see into it in the day. I never would have noticed.

Ahhhhh.....

She probably thought she was helping Daddy by feeding the fish. Maybe a bit to, much.

Yep, my kids are all grown, and in College now, but they've all had there way to helpful moments too.

Good luck with the tank, and don't be to hard on her Daddy, it will probably be one of her earliest memories.

;-D

Maybe if there was something worth looking into there then maybe? :D

I have my fuge behind a tinted glass door with lots to look at in there so I guess I figured otherwise. Figured since there was mishap in the tank and since you did find the bottle of food in the sump you would have peeked in there to see.

Glad all is good now though! somewhat good I guess.

But that would make too much sense....

for some odd reason that thought never even crossed my mind...I just figured the food had all gone through the return pump and been chopped into bits and dissolved into the water

Not to worry....she's still my little Angel :angel1:

Although she always seems to be up to something mischevious...

Not the first time she's messed with the tank, but last time it was simply her taking the magnet off my Hydor Koralia, taking the lid off my skimmer, and dropping the magnet down into the bubble chamber. She was very proud of herself.

Ah yes toddlers are so helpful with the tank. My son loves to help me with everything I do around the house, especially the tank maintenance.

My wifes favorite was one fine Saturday when I was doing water changes...

I'm up in the front room working on the reef tank when I suddenly hear squeals of joy from my 2 year old son and hear the sound of a waterfall cascading gently over our tile floor. I look up to see what the heck he has done and he's standing in front of the fresh water tank holding the feed line from the tank to the UV filter in his hands watching the water shoot about 6 feet into the air from the wonderful force of the maxijet 1200.

He was so pleased with his self after draining 2/3 of the FW tank that I had just finished a water change on, but I couldn't kill him either. I'm the dummy that left the lock off.

Then there was the time we found Sponge Bob and all of his friends lying on the sand bed in the nano. Another lock I didn't even think about installing.

Alas I can say yours definitely wins for catastrophe. Glad everything is looking good and you were able to prevent any loses.

Yeah that would make too much sense....

Glad it all worked out though! Forced upgrade by the kiddo!

I have a baby sister that stays with us sometimes and she just watches the tanks....I have tons of other FW tanks as well as a breeding rack at one point and she never really bothered anything...Now her turtle tank is a different story! Every time we get a sack of crawfish I somehow find a few in her turtle tank....

Glad everything worked out for you.

My 3yr old son or 4yr daughter likes to throw crayons in my sump. I have a 6"/8" gap from the wall to the back of the stand and I have found red and green crayons in my sump. Haven't caught them in the act, but I suspect both of them are in on it :)

Well my kid is 17 y/o and the other one is a Senior in college.
However, my 11 y/o Jack Russel has twice escaped the kitchen barricade while we are either asleep or away from the house. She goes to the fish tank/cabinet ate a whole bag of Sushi Nori. Then brought it back to her bed in the kitchen a chewed up can of Cyclopeeze. She sprinkled all the way down the stairs.
I guess those late night cravings can really get to you!
I guess.

Jim,
Remember I warned you about securing the doors on your tank stand to prevent your kids trying to feed your fishes when I checked out your tank at the fragswap last month  Didn't I told you the story about Invicible's daughter dumped a whole ketchup bottle to his tank refugium to feed the fishies :D

My son did that to one of our FW tanks. More than once. The fish food is now all locked up or up very high. They do like to look in the refugiums though and it hadn't occurred to me that they might try to feed the fish anything other than fish food. eeek! Might need to figure out a way to lock those cabinets. Glad everything turned out okay for you!

Glad it all worked out for you and oyu didn't lose anything.

When Ellie was about 4 or 5, she put the water hose into the pond and turned it on. We didn't notice for 4 days as we just didn't go into the backyard due to busyness.

Well ALL of the fish we bloated about time I did notice. We lost quite a bit if pricey fish.

I tried to make her feel bad also about it. Her response to me was, "We can just go buy new fish daddy."

Needless to say, I threw in the 10 for $10 deal.
