Yes, the protien skimmer I have has a connection on the waste cup for an external waste collector. I tried a water bottle with a hole cut in the cap to run the hose thru, but this did not work very well.

Some people just use an old gallon milk jug.

Diesnt help in an overflow situation though like the real external waste collectors

i use a 1/2 gallon watter jug. i remove the cap entirely and let the hose go through there. it's just a plastic water jug with a handle so it works great for me.

That was the problem with the water bottle. I came home yesterday to water on the floor because the bottle had filled up and overflowed. I was just wandering if anyone had come up with a good designe for a DIY waste collector.

was the jug filled with skimmate or water? if it was skimmate, you have to empty every once in a while. i can leave my jug in place for about a week and a half or more before i have to empty it. and it stinks like butt when i have to empty it lol.

the professional containers have a ball in them to stop flooding from occuring.

A ping pong ball to be exact :)
all it does is rise with the over flowing skimmate/water and seal a whole which lets the air escape out of the collector. this causes a back pressure in the whole skimmer system causing the foam head in the skimmer to fall and no longer produce skimmate.

i'd think that a piece of pvc/acrylic tube (slightly larger diameter than a ping pong ball) and a cap with a ~3/4" hole drilled in the top attached to the top of your collector would do the trick with some tweaking.
