You can just move everything over, but ditch the sand. Keep one cup of sand to seed the new sand. If you’re bringing fish over I’d add some Dr. Tim’s bacteria to help it along quickly so you don’t see a big ammonia spike. If ammonia is creeping up, do a water change to knock it down.

The plan would be to move a good portion of the sand plus new sand, then rocks and all the bio stuff along with yhe new ones. If this is sufficient to not have to cycle the new tank or all again. Either that or cycle the new for a couple of weeks with some new rocks and nee sand. Then move the rest over.

again thanks for all the great advice!

When you move the sand, you will very likely stir up all kinds of stuff which will cause at least a “mini cycle” in the current tank. From my own experience moving my tank, if you are able to, use new sand in the new tank. (*Right now, add as much extra filter media to the current tank as possible so you can move a lot over without upsetting the bacterial balance too much.). As soon as the new tank is filled with saltwater, move as much rock and seeded filter media from the current tank, move a cup or two of old sand, and add some bottled bacteria to both tanks (1/2 bottle per tank should be fine, just to be safe). Test the new tank water daily until it’s cycled(ghost feed a little if there’s no a/n/n reading at first). It shouldn’t take long to get there. This may be overkill for the size tank you’re moving, but if you have the time, it’s definitely better than losing any critters. Oh, and before you move said critters, make sure salinity, temp, and pH match; wouldn’t be the worst idea to remove 10 gallons and replace it with the old tank water to help acclimate. Good luck 🙂

I would consider moving some of your biological filtration to a canister filter If it’s not too late for that. It will free up room in your AIO compartments and allow you to relocate your biological filter portion whenever and wherever you want. As mentioned above, stirring your sand will cause a mini cycle but so will new sand seeded with a cup from the old. Make sure you move all the live rock as that is where your biological filtration currently resides. Presumably you will be adding additional live rock. If the rock is ready to go live rock (fully seasoned, maybe from another member or lfs) it will add to your biological capacity. Even without sand you should be able to get by with the filtration capacity with additional live rock. If it was me, I would start with the rock and get everything settled. add the sand a few weeks later if I decided that bare bottom was not for me. Either way, adding some starter Bacteria will speed up the process. Hope that helps a little. Good luck.

The ideal way would be going to the new location and set up the new tank with the old media, a cup of sand, and a few pieces of rock. Test and match all the parameters. Then make the move after it settles in for a few weeks.

Doing it all in one day brings a lot of surprises and it always takes much longer than anticipated. This is coming from a guy that changes tanks every few years. Believe me...be prepared for headaches.

One video that might help you plan it more cleverly. Go to 17:20 and you’ll quickly understand why I said ditch the sand. :)

He was over at my place earlier today and I recommended that using most of the sand is ok. It’s a five month old tank so it should be pretty clean. However, if the sand is churning out junk like that then I wouldn’t reuse it either.

Awesome once again appreciate all the great advice. I’m going to use the old media a few pieces of old rocks and some of the sand to start the cycle. Once all the parameters match the old tank, will move the rest over.
Once again, really appreciate all the great advice!
