So as my monti has grown, I can see that it is clearly beginning to aggravate one head of my candy cane. Do montis sting? They are really close to each other, but it doesn't look like they're actually touching yet, and I've never seen any sweepers come off of the monti. I can imagine when the candy cane opens fully, they may touch, I'm just surprised the monti appears to be winning the battle so decisively.

It's my belief that montis use mesenteric filaments to attack and not sweepers. I could be wrong though :). Have you seen any indication of this?

First of all, I had to look up mesenteric filaments to see what they were. Now that I know what they are, I have seen those from my Merulina before, but not from this particular monti. I'll keep an eye on it.

Mine were harmless. I had acros growing on the top of them so they were touching at all times. I would be worried more about the CC stinging the monti.

Watch out for montis though...they are invasive and by the time you know it your rock is covered and not very easy to remove once encrusted.

the montis typically get stung from my experience, but they grow so fast, you'll see a monti get stung, grow vertically and around and shade the other sps.
