the average person won't put in the time it takes to learn what this hobby needs, and that's all there is to it. I "gave" a 10 gallon nano tank to a "friend" when I was pregnant and getting rid of everything. She did absolutely everything bassackwards even WITH my advice and the constant phone calls asking me for advice. She started buying corals left & right, added in fish and more live rock, but then "couldn't afford" to buy a little skilter filter I recommended, or the right light I recommended for the corals she'd bought. The only time she'd do a water change was when she'd call me wondering why something was dying or looking bad or what is this weird slimy stuff growing? and I'd ask when was the last time she changed some water? Now she's up & left her family and her husband has the responsibility of the tank and HE keeps asking us questions and the tank looks absolutely pathetic, with every type of algae possible, all the nice corals I gave her & she bought are dead, but he just "loves it and wants to keep it" when we talk about it and I'm like, I will take it back, if you want, since you obviously haven't got a frickin clue. Ugh. Ok, sorry, I have serious resentment built up over this.
When I first started the hobby, I went to a very well known sponsor store, which I still love and shop at, picked out a live rock to buy because it had such pretty red coloring on it and was told by the owner that yes, it was a nice rock, and although he normally didn't sell rocks out of that particular tank, he'd make an exception for me. Got home with my prized rock and started doing some hunting online about red things growing on rocks and discovered that I'd just purchased a rock covered in cyano!
So it really doesn't matter where you shop, it's all about Buyer Beware. Educate yourself or be ready to accept the responsibility of letting yourself be taken advantage of.
