I have one tank that evaporates water like crazy.... I add about 5 gallons every two days.....

where the heck does it go? I could leave a glass of water next to it and it not evaporate as fast as this thing does....

it has a cover, the sump is enclosed.... just has me baffled....

I have a bigger tank that only evaporates about 5 gallons a week

Just curious if anyone knows why this happens Cope.

well not to bad really but you must have a strong light or next to a window that may be the cause but 5 gallons every 2 day is about right tome at least how big is ur tank

Tank has more surface area than the glass of water hence more exposure to dry air that pulls off the moisture. Your tank water is also warmer another factor in evaporation. Do you run any fans on your system?

Is it closer to any of the house hold air vents either register or return?

yeah, fans moving air across the top will increase evap.
halides keep humidity in my house at 90% sometimes. we have a dehumidifier so it feels comfortable. your stuff may be enclosed but water will still escape. my wife has a cichlid tank with glass tops on everything and it still loses 2 gallons per week. the thing has hardly anywhere for gas to exchange. the water level in the main is so high the glass tops do not have deposits left on them because it is always wet.

I would guess tank temp.

I have a 125G that used to be at ~82F and lost 1 1/2 gallon a day.

Recently I added some fans that bring the temp down to ~80F. I need to measure it more precisely but I think I lose <1 G a day now.

I have a 125 as well and my evap is the same. I add 3-4g every other day. I will be adding a fan soon. I thought that would increase it. Temp is a key reason for evaporation.

I don't think my fans increase the flow on the surface of the water much. They point between the MH and the surface. They seem to cool the lights down more.

If the surrounding air is dry you will lose more water from the tank and if the air is more humid less water is lost, same as John said.

Angel4: that's funny! You know that your tank is being cooled down by evaporation when you added the fans right? :)

Cheers

It seems like I don't have to add top off water as often.
I am filling the container and will try to measure the amount of evaporation more accurately.
