wood work class- building custom stands and canopies
class 1a framing
class 1b skinning and trims (miter cuts)
class 1c staining
class 1d doors
I know we have some excellent wood workers on this board

all classes above should be separate through out the year and not bunched into one class and also scheduled 1 month apart.

DIY controllers would be good a good class. using adruino, but this will have a cost to all members upfront for parts, unless the club builds one and then program it.
then have a raffle for it. i know nothing about adruino so i can't teach it.

all classes need to be professionally video taped and available to members (paid).
i am willing to do the editing as i have a robust system designed for just that.
don't own a video camera at the moment, i have a printer that prints directly to dvds so we can have nice looking disc made, and my wife is good with dvd cover designs, but we have other members that are good graphic designers as well.

Ray why don't we post the list of items the BOD was tossing around as part of this conversation. There was a thread I had started and then I think one you did that had some of mine plus some additional items.

I remember last year during Hurricane season a few members brought to the attention to do a power supply backup workshop, (generators, battery backup pro's or DIY's) hope that's one of them.

Maybe have a event for new members. Talk about designing and setting up tanks, bare mins...etc. I know this information is all over the net and there is no "one way" of doing things, but I think it would be good to get new members that may be building or about to build their tanks out to a meeting. Also maybe have a meeting or two for people who are members but aren't paid. Just more things to try and get people more active because we have a lot of active posters but not paid members and even lesser, paid members that do not come to the meetings. Maybe do 2 frag swaps this year? It would be nice to have an event like next wave down here..

Maybe have one about frag tanks, q/h tanks, outdoor frag tanks, propagation of corals, etc...again I know these are usually covered in forums and on the net but this is something to bring members together.

I think a frag demo event is a good idea and it would be great to have another frag swap early in the year, make it a twice a year event. The advanced topics are nice (controllers, building stands, etc) but it would also be a potentially good member drive to have a "How to set up a tank" workshop. Basics on cycling, testing for the basic parameters, other newbie stuff.

If there is something you guys really want, feel free to spearhead the event. The BOD is only a few people, this is your club too :) It would be REALLY nice to have more volunteers making things happen for the club. It would be great to have a lot of events, but first we need volunteers/help. We had to cancel two events alone last year, one because only a couple people signed up for it, and the other (a tank tour) because only 2 hosts stepped up to be on the tour.

Events the BOD has been looking at for a little while:

Aquarium photography (beginner/intermediate)
Aquarium photography (advanced/photo editing)
Chemistry, dosing, and tank maintenance
Acrylics (repairs/builds/small projects)
Stands and canopy building
Fish propagation (rearing techniques/first foods/live food culture)
Coral propagation (fragging techniques/frag tank setups)
Emergency preparedness for aquariums
Quarantine procedures for fish, corals, and inverts (equipment/medications/dips/techniques/diseases/pests)
Galveston collection trips (maybe even Corpus Christi with enough interest?)
Tank tours around Houston
Tank build tours with the emphasis on the setup/equipment used
Beginner tank setup overview
Local fish store membership drives
Guest speakers TBD

I'm sure there's some I'm forgetting about at the moment.

Ok here are some ideas we where tossing around in the BOD forum a while back. Some are repeats at this point.

steveb said:
Cat you may already have something and I saw you mention something about a generators for a workshop. I like that but maybe it should be something along the lines of Emergency Preparedness - What do you do when the power goes out? generators, homemade DC power configurations, etc., air pumps, cooling

steveb said:
Given that I just lost $500 worth of fish I would love it if we could bring in someone from live aquaria or an author or someone with significant QT, hospital, treating fish experience to speak (edward J. noga, Bob Goemans, Lance Ichinotsubo, Kelly Jedlicki)

Tektit said:
Yes, my idea was for general emergency preparedness, covering all sorts of topics including back-up power.

Really like the idea of quarantine/treatment workshop, that's something that would be very beneficial. Methods, setups, what to look for, etc.

Most other ideas are repeats.

Definitely should try to do some tank tours spread out throughout the year, hopefully can get hosts this time!

Another breeding workshop would be good, think we got enough in-house people for a good talk. Also cover live food culture, phyto/rotifers/copepods/amphipods/mysis.

Need to keep the folks from Coral Restoration on in our plans.

Agreed - Maybe bring in Greshem from Reed Mariculture or someone from Algagen (I have a contact, the owner)?

I really like the idea of trying to bring in someone from liveaquaria to talk about QT and treating fish as we just had a total tank whipe out as well, and are now trying to set up a QT system in the fish room. Or course after the tank blowout this weekend i am not sure i am going to be allowed to put ANOTHER tank in the fish room. We will see.

Coral farmers market idea is the best idea....maybe twice a year....

Are we talking the Tyree CFM? I spoke with Steve Tyree and he is very interested and open to the idea of a Houston show but we need to do the leg work. If anyone wants to assist in organizing this event please let me know.

:cheer2: I'm here brotha! What do I need to do? LOL

I really don't have anything planned yet for the year and no traveling that I know of so my weekends are open. A lot has already been covered but some things I would like to see are

Acrylics workshop
dosing/water testing workshop
Fragging workshop
Frag swaps

And like Fred said, we need to get back to the basics. Lots of new members here and even us veterans could be retaught some things. One thing I'd like to say while we are here is let's not cancel things this year. Even if there's only two people showing up, if those two want to hang out and do whatever the workshop was then let them. I'm open to throw together the tank/equipment tour now. I'll be filling with water this weekend but anyone can come by still anytime they want.

Not only do we need official MARSH meetings but shoot, we need more friendly get togethers also just to hang out and chat reefs!!

Oh yeah, I really really like the Local Fish Store Membership drives! That's an awesome idea. Do we have a MARSH pop up tent, folding table, chairs, and MARSH literature? I'd be more than happy to set up outside local fish stores and promote our club. Maybe give people a 10% discount for signing up that day at the event.
