In my old tank I had additional power put in for the chiller and halides and pumps drew a lot of power. With modern equipment is this necessary ?

Just depends how much you run on one circuit but with the new tech, chillers aren't needed as much often which cuts most of the AMPs down.

Don't cheap out on power/surge strips...not really necessary to add power but me mindful of what all is on that circuit like bigrick said

Yes I use surge protectors on every outlet cause power flickers and sensitive electronics do not go well together.

With the introduction of LEDs, you lost a lot of electricity requirements. They run at a fraction of the power plus no need for chillers. I couldn't imagine any standard sized tank needing more than a single 20amp breaker to power it. Mind you, that's based off the recommendation that any circuit should never be regularly pushed passed 75% capacity, or 15amps.

But like Gregg said, if you can find the wattage or amperage that each device uses, then you can calculate your load. I'll help you with any of the calculations if you need it.
