The trend now is to go with either shallow sand beds or bare-bottom tanks instead of DSBs. For those who go bare-bottom, a popular option is to line the bottom of the tank with a piece of cutting board or starboard. This protects the glass from scratches from falling rocks, etc. and is very easy to siphon clean of detritus. It also looks a little more natural than a bare-bottom tank - from a distance, it almost looks like a sandbed - and the white bottom reflects light and makes the tank look brighter.

Sounds cool - can't wait to see how it turns out. Do you have any links to pictures of any other tanks that have been done this way?

Thanks, Sarbubjr. That setup definitely has its appeal, although I wonder how it will look once he has more coral.

I guess I'll stick with my 2" of CC for now.

thanks for the clarification, mikester. i wasn't sure if you were trying to cut up your tank inhabitants or if this was some kind of inside joke. :)

good luck with the tank, btw. i hope you find your zoanthids.
