The trend now is to go with either shallow sand beds or bare-bottom tanks instead of DSBs. For those who go bare-bottom, a popular option is to line the bottom of the tank with a piece of cutting board or starboard. This protects the glass from scratches from falling rocks, etc. and is very easy to siphon clean of detritus. It also looks a little more natural than a bare-bottom tank - from a distance, it almost looks like a sandbed - and the white bottom reflects light and makes the tank look brighter.
