Abe came by my house and said I had the "fire and ice" SPS. I have never heard of anyone call it this. Is it the same thing as the red polyp danae?

Here's my little frag:

That's awesome dude. I'm first in line for a frag when ever it gets big enough! Too sweet.

And we thought he was talking about the movie, which is kinda old but good.

And, who ever first named this coral as a M.danae was incorrect. Steve T. has the most matched named on his website as a M. Monasteriata. The Danae has grooves like you wouldnt believe, but not the "red polyp danae". His website is www.reeffarmers.com. The "red polyp danae" name has stuck with this coral. By the way, Atlantis Aquarium sells dime sizes of this frag Al.

Anyhow, here it is when I first got it in (bleached):

The one coral I ever bought from Reefer Madness was sold to me as a Montipora Monasteriata, and it looks nothing like yours. It grows in a big round thick plate without ridges. It's got very small, very bright green polyps growing out of a green/brown coral. On the RM site it was lavendar.

Dude, that is one crappy pic.

Its hard getting a pic of it when it blends in with the rocks. It goes out of focus so that is the best i could do. :)

Sherri..

what type of lighting do you have? I have found that my purple cap that I got from Kevin browns out under 10K AB's. But once i placed my 14K AC, it purpled up. Your Monti could be reacting the same. Do you happen to know if your monti was picked up in shallow or deeper waters? That way you will know for sure what lighting it needs as some wavelengths are lost in deeper waters.

I dunno...all I know is it was damn expensive and was described as moonlit lavendar or some crazy RM description...I even called the dude and asked him if it is as purple to his naked eyes as it appears on the picture, and he assured me it was. It arrives the very next morning, icky green-brown with neon green polyps. Blech. I haven't ordered from him since.

You want some of it? It's rather large and is taking up too much real estate. BTW that browned-out yellow stag you gave me is lightening up quite nicely, finally...it's got the faintest hint of yellow tips, and the body itself is a very pale shade of tan. I hope it keeps going back to yellow. You want a piece of that back too?

Sherri, that would be wonderuful. Let me give your frag of the monti a shot under my 14K AC's. We can give it 2 months and see if it will turn back to purple. Another note, sometimes when you buy BIG colonies, over 50% of the time, they may brown out. I have heard that people with 14K's and 20K's have better luck keeping the color when its still new. Anyhow, on a big colony, the size usually takes months for it to regain its color. Here's one for example that I got from Reefermadness. It was given to me as a brown out.. and I purchased it in April 2004.
