Just wanted to thank everyone for their inputs on my fish dying post. I followed your advice and my yellow tang is kicking butt. First night, but still, looks much better than the other fish I bought. Funny how ignorant you can be even after 5 years in the hobby. The LFS told me to float the bag to acclimate the fish. LOL. I used the drip method and everything looks fine so far.

Living for a little while anyway. The tang has grey blotches on his head and gill region. Is a little spastic also. Tried to net him out to treat him, but trying that for hours gets to you. I guess I will wait for him to die and somehow try to get it out.

Whats strange is I thought it was a gonner. He would just hide in the rocks and try to sleep with the watchman goby. I tried for days to catch it and put it in a quarantine tank. No way was it going to let me get him. Now the grey patches are leaving. I dont know what was wrong with him, but he seems to be getting better everyday. I didnt put anything in the tank either to cure anything since I have corals. You never know.

Keep him fed well, with a good quality food and he very well could pull out of it. Yellow tangs are pretty tough fish, as a general rule. Go to the Asian food store & buy some dried laver (nori) - the red or purple stuff. It's packed full of all kinds of micro nutrients including iodine. That'll help him heal.

Eric,

Is the grey patches from stress like when they are scared or startled? If he was hiding that may be because he was scared off his new environment and hence the grey patches.

So far I have just let him pick off the rocks, but I will keep that food in mind djreef. tvu, you could be right about it being stress related. It would appear on his gill area and on his stomach also. Before he would hide all the time and now he just swims around eating whatever there is, which is alot. Thanks for the info.

the fact that you say it's on his gills makes me wonder. Could it be something in the water? I know that some diseases or even an out of norm pH can 'burn' gills and fins. I'm guessing you have checked out your pH, but other substances can do the same if present in high concentrations. Can heavy metals do this? It just seems like it's too coincidental to happen again and again to your fish and should warrant an explanation or even my bad guesses :).

You are completely right cparka, I would think it has something to do with the water. My water parameters are normal, I originally thought it was some kind of parasite in my water that was killing all my fish, but people on this board said you would see that and it wouldnt kill them overnight. I think that my other fish dying had to do with my acclimation process which was ignorant. I have since changed that and my fish are living if I put them in. Even though this is the first one I have put in since. If it is a parasite, I have no idea, if it is my water, i have no idea. I am still leaning towards stress, but dont know why as he is no longer hiding, he eats all the time and the grey patches are slowly leaving. Thanks for your response.
