A few weeks ago I picked up a frag tank that I asked a friend to build. It sat in my spare bedroom for a while, then I got cracking on the stand. I gathered the supplies on Thursday and built the stand on Friday and Saturday. I then painted the inside of the stand with white Kilz paint. I attempted to stain the exterior, but the wife hated it and told me to paint it. She's much happier now =).

The tank is 48x24x16 with a pretty big external overflow box and a thin eurobrace. I do plan on putting a very thin layer of sand in it so that my only three residents from my previous aquarium (sea cucumber, brittle star and serpent star) have some substrate to find food on. After that, I will put in some black eggcrate, held up off the bottom by acrylic rods (or at least that's the current plan).

Lighting will probably be a T5HO light fixture suspended from the ceiling or some form of wall/stand mounted arms. The return pump will be a Mag 9.5. I will also be using a Tunze 6105 powerhead, EuroReef RS250 protein skimmer, and either a Deltec PF601 calcium reactor or GEO 618 calcium reactor.

I've still got to put a plywood top on the stand. I originally didn't want to, but the tank doesn't quite sit on my imperfect stand the way I want it to, so I plan to do that tonight. Then I will fill it up, add salt, put some sand in, let it sit for a couple of days and then introduce my three invertebrates =). I still need a sump, which may come in the form of a 40 breeder or the friend who built my tank, we'll see.

You need to fill that with frags so that I can get some. Looks like a great start!

Where is the tank right now? I had placed a tank in a back bedroom during our move, and the air turnover rate was SOOO low (especially in a new, well insulated house) that I couldnt sustain pH. As in, never over 7.7. I think that was the main contributing factor behind losing a lot of my coral at that time.

yeah, i'll be filling it up soon enough.

as for location, it will be in a bedroom, but the door will always stay open and i frequently open the windows in that room because the wife hates the skimmer smell.

i ordered some black eggcrate and some things to support the eggcrate in the tank.

i think the wood for the skin is oak. i tried to get birch but lowes didn't have it in a 4x8 sheet for some reason.

the stain was a dark walnut. we both liked the color, but i did a crappy job applying it and i had to use wood filler on a particular area due to a bad cut that looked terrible with stain. so, the paint was the only other route to cover up the blemishes.

i can't complain too much though. this is the first time i've built a stand and i don't get to play with power tools too much, so i'm pretty surprised it turned out as well as it did.

Please forgive my newbishness but can you explain the airflow/ph connection or point me to some good web articles about it?

Thanks,
Robert

if a room doesn't get proper circulation, it could have a lack of oxygen or excess of co2 and keep the tank's pH low. the tank itself exchanges gases with the air around it.

really? that thing seems rock solid to me. i put a plywood topper on it to help distribute the weight, but it's just an 80-gallon aquarium.

Simply a function of increased CO2 concentration inside a newly built home. While CO2 levels hover in the 300-400 ppm outside, a new home can keep them as high as 2000ppm. When this happens, pH will drop as a result. So when I ran my tank in a back bedroom, without a sump or skimmer, I was asking for trouble.

yes, but i still have to change out the flooring in the dining room (where it will be going), then order the tank and equipment. it's still a ways off, but it'll happen soon hopefully. with a new job and a nice pay increase, it should happen pretty quickly (fingers crossed).

Woohoo! New job and pay increase sounds good Brandon. Frag tank looks like a great setup and you really know how to build a stand to last.

Cheers
