I am wanting to build a frag tank out of my left over 20L.

I will not be tying into my display system, so this will be a self sufficient tank.

I have an AC70, a light (a few actually i am trying to decide what one to use), some left over base rock, a 100 watt heater, and a koralia nano 240 powerhead. i really dont want to add a sump, but if i NEED to, I can.

do I need sand in a frag tank? do i need a fish or two to help the corals somehow? i am really wanting this to be a "set it and leave it" type tank where i can check it every couple days and change the water weekly and grow some softies and lps.

I dont have any SPS, so I am not concerned with perfect parameters or whatever. I really just wanna start growing some of the more desireable zoas...

any opinions/ides appreciated.

while I'm not super knowledgeable in this, I think most of the frag tanks I've seen are barebottom with a few snails as cuc...I would think that with no fish load the water parameters are easier to manage? I could be wrong though.

That is kind of what I am thinking.

Would I still need to "feed" the tank?

If so, what would I feed?

Most frag tanks tend to tie to the main tank for a true set it and forget it. And typically have a few fish like a tang to keep macro algae at bay

I am currently running a 20h frag tank with no sump.

You have to REALLY stay on top of your alkalinity if you plan on keeping SPS. If not you still need to watch it with LPS... with zoas I'm not sure but would think they would be less sensitive (but not my area of expertise at all)...

I have found that you are a)going to have to do water changes frequently (weekly) or b)get a skimmer and do them a little less frequently.

My setup -- 2 AI SOL Blues (probably overkill but what the heck they where sitting around doing nothing), a HOB skimmer, an in tank filter (mechanical filtration/GAC/GFO), an MP10 for circulation, tunze ATO and a heater. I have 5 or six smallish pieces of live rock. Believe it or not corals produce a lot of waste. I have one turbo snail and 2 small hermits.

For zoa's I would think it would be fine. If it can be done for SPS and LPS (me) it should be doable for softies.

I have a bare bottom 20h tank that is a frag tank for only zoas and palys. It has a nano skimmer, HOB filter, heater, small powerhead and BoostLED. I still don't have a cleanup crew but will add some snails and maybe a fish to keep the pod population down (they are everywhere). I feed a couple of drops of Zeovit coral food a week. I also do weekly water changes since it seems to get pretty dirty without any CUC.
