Last week I offered a few free corals to marsh members. As always I grabbed my (bone cutters) and couldn't squeeze hard enough to cut the coral. What ends up happening is, the coral breaks in another spot or the whole colony breaks loose from the base. I'm not sure about you guys or gals, I hate it....!

I remember watching a video of a fellow overseas using a hammer and chisel to trim SPS. This cool idea was perfect and the guy made it look easy. I thought I would give it a try!! I didn't have a chisel but i used a long screw driver and hammer. PERFECT !! Easy Easy Easy and it works !!

Let me know how it works for you guys..

I have always used bone cutters. It's never pretty. When it finally cuts through its like the coral explodes into lots of pieces. Will keep an eye on this tread to see if someone has a better option.

The few guys that made it over watched as I hammered the coral, had the opportunity to see for themselves, it works!! It appeared as if i was an expert at freaking fragging :)

Thanks for this post! Iv been needing to frag a few items but didn't know where to start and too scared to break things loose from the rock.

Up until now my fragging technique consisted of accidentally bumping things with my hand while cleaning and feeding or fighting fish running into corals and braking them lol

I've run into the same issues. I use a hack saw blade by hand and cut the frag while submerged in tank water. Works fairly well if you use to much pressure you can still crack or break them though. Its the equivalent to the fragging bandsaw I guess

I have a few different types/sizes depending on what I need to frag.
The only problem I usually encounter when fragging in the display is getting the right angle.
I've got two different sizes of the style cutters Sergio posted and then I have a pair of these for the thicker stuff.
BRS Large Curved Blade SPS Coral Bone Cutter - Bulk Reef Supply

Dennis - Just wondering, what are the advantages of using the curve cutters?? Do you absorb most of the branch or just the edge of the branch?? How clean is the cut?

I got them because I was having trouble cutting thicker branches without destroying them in the process, like branching Frogspawn or hammer for example.
I would end up shattering the stony tissue because the regular scissor style was never big enough to engulf the whole branch. These really wrap around the branch and give a cleaner cut.
But you can't use them for skinnier stuff... they don't close enough to make the cut.
Maybe there are smaller ones available? I don't know... this is the only pair I've ever had in this style.
