Has anyone had any experience with City Pets? They had a lot of small frags today for $4.99 each. Since I'm still pretty new to this, I wanted to see if anyone had any comments one way or the other as far as experience with this particular retailer....Thanks .....and I sure enjoyed my first Marsh experience today... :D

I've never had problem before with any corals acquired from CP. IMO best CONSISTENT selection of SPS in Houston.

I went by there today and picked up a nice teal-green staghorn and a 4" Mandarin Goby. The stag is about 6" tall with 7 branches, all with smaller limbs---$45 and $12 for the goby. I always deal with Donnie, he always makes me a good deal.

i was there this afternoon and browsed around. pretty nice, but i'm happier with the $5 frag of xenia I got from Trey at the DIY workshop. :D it was tons bigger and even came on a rock covered in coraline algae.

by the way, i was on euroreef's website and noticed that city pets is the only Houston distributor of their skimmers. When I got there, the only skimmers in the store were precision marine. what gives! I asked a couple employees and they just gave me weird looks and asked me what brand I was looking for over and over again. arg!

Linda, it seems like a good store. Only one of a couple of stores I've seen all summer without weed-like aiptasia anemones stinging their corals. They had the flake and freeze-dried cyclopeeze on their shelves. Didn't look in the freezer, but they probably had the frozen kind in there too (and I mention this because you were asking about it in another thread). admittedly, I guess I should have sought out the owner to inquire about the skimmer. the place was pretty busy tho, and i didn't want to wait around too long.

Well I was probably one of the ones you saw roaming around there. I just got back a bit earlier..I agree about the frags from Trey..I got three yesterday and they are all doing great and nice size. Thanks for the input....I know now why I wasn't getting on this site much until recently. I read how someone got something great and I have to dash out and see what I can find....talk about an obsession and I am just getting started....:) Take care...Linda

You might as well accept it. It's both an obsession and addiction. Karen and I have often described buying trips and frag trading to drug deals, lol.

City Pets is pretty good, but not perfect like any other store. We bought a tri color acro and half was RTN. A big part is knowing what to look for and we're very much in the learning stage where sps is concerned.

Hey guys, would yall do me a favor when you go into city pets and buy SPS. Would you request that they wear latex gloves when they handle the corals as to not over stress them and cause them to RTN.

I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks!

Oh to get addicted so quickly!!! And I can partially blame you, Karen, I saw your post earlier today about going to City Pets....:) There don't seem to be a lot of stores that carry frags or am I wrong about that? And while I have you on the line...:) any thoughts on a rose anemone and pink skunk clown? I saw the pair a couple of weekends ago and they have stuck in my head...

Pink skunks dont naturally host in BTA's. They prefer LTA's in the wild.

In reguards to "Rose Tips", there is one I saw on sale earlier today on this web page, but if it is gone, Fish land has 7 HUGE ones for $32.00 each. I picked one up about 3 days ago, and love it. The one I have is around 7" when fully opened, and there are more that size and a little smaller. Also they have a very nice group of Maroon and golds. I got one about 3 1/2" long and very meaty. Two more still sit there for about $30 each. He let me walk out of the store giving him $60 for both, the clown and the RBTA.

However, even if it's not your natural host you may get them to host in your BTA. Our saddle back crosses don't naturally host in a BTA, but we've managed to convince ours to. I've seen skunks in BTAs at the store, but there are no guarantees.

Oh, and I'm more than happy to encourage addiction in others :D

You're right, there aren't many places that carry frags. Kenny at AC carries a few, but I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

Exactly. If we don't, who will we swap frags with, or sell our old equipment to when we're ready to upgrade? :D

Um-hmm.......when I'm ready to upgrade my skimmer, I'll know where to go

I think often you will find that Clowns will cross over to an anenome that looks close to one that will naturally host in. If they host in a "carpet" they may host in a hadonni for a LTA or Ritteri there is a good chance they will host in a BTA. Clowns smell out the anenomes that they naturally host in so if you provide them one that they have hosted in the ocean or LFS there is a higher probability that they will host in your aquarium in the same species of anenome. Tank raised clowns are a crap shoot outside of their natural hosts. Some people report TR Ocellaris hosting in a Ritteri with in minutes some have had them host in after while w/ BTAs. In the end its up to the clown itself if it will host or not and all that info about putting pictures up of clowns hosting to show your clown what to do I find humorous. The best chance you have of an instant match between clown and anenome is purchasing a clown that is already hosting and its host or going with their natural hosts.

Ok, ya'll can relax....I'm hooked...I saw several pink skunk clowns at village a couple of weekends ago and they were all lying around in rose anemones....That is correct terminology, isn't it?
"lying around"... lol

I also vote yes on city pets- I bought a 90 rr (because I got inpatient and could not wait any longer - was tried of looking for a used one) and have bought several small frags from them. I like dealing donnie and david both. Their prices were the best on the tank and they did just what they said they would do, which was a nice change.

Can I vote for um twice :D
