Frags & More Open House & Galveston Collection Trip and BBQ 6/21/14- Event Discussion

This will be the official discussion thread for our Galveston Collection Trip and BBQ on June 21, 2014. Please ask any questions and/or post suggestions here. We will also use this thread to post updates as they become available. Anyone who plans on attending this event needs to RSVP with the number of people coming in their party (so we can get a good estimate for food). You will RSVP here http://www.marsh-reef.org/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=32&day=2014-06-21&c=2. This is going to be a lot of fun and is one of the most requested events we schedule so please mark your calendars and plan on attending.

This just In.....Don with our wonderful sponsor FRAGS AND MORE has offered to have members come by prior to the event (1:30 or 2 pm) to check out his selection. He carries a wide variety of SPS and zoas (including ORA items) and is usually open by appointment only. This is a great opportunity to check out this LFS and support our sponsor! Don has also offered a deal where he will ship back for FREE with any purchase of $120 or more, or of course you can also take your purchases with you if preferred. If you are looking for anything in particular, please send Don a pm. FRAGS AND MORE is located at 9414 Barracuda Dr. TX City.

What's the "plan" for this one? I have not done a collection trip.

This is a "Rough Draft" of the itinerary:

The "plan" is to gather at Steve's place around 3 pm. Eat some burgers and hotdogs and talk tanks for a bit with other members. Then after that, we will learn about the Citizen Science project that Laura and Sarah (A&M PhD students) are working on regarding the collection of sygnathids from the gulf. With full bellies and having learned a bit, we will venture off to the first collection area and start collecting. This area is a shallow grassy area good for collection of pipefish and ghost shrimp/ hermit crabs. We will stay there for a bit before we head back to Steve's and clean up to get ready to head to the seawall when it gets dark. At the seawall, we will collect peps and other fish and inverts.

Here is a guide to what you can collect in Galveston:
http://www.marsh-reef.org/new-to-the-hobby/4748-what-collect-coast.html?highlight=galveston

Please remember that anyone collecting should have a Fishing permit for the day. These can be purchased at Walmart if you want to get one while you are in Galveston. They cost $11.

Some things you might want to bring:
Buckets
Nets
Battery operated aerators
headlamps/flashlights
lawn chairs
sunscreen
fishing gear
towels
water shoes for swimming
rubber boots or some kind of protective footwear for collecting among the rocks
gloves

Here's some more things to do (besides collecting) while you're at the BBQ.

Swimming
The bay water here is clean and the bottom is hard sand. Inside my pier, the water is between 1 ft. and 4 ft. Outside my pier the water depth 5 ft. sloping down to 8 ft. The bottom is free of debris except for oyster shell up next to the bulkhead. I hang out in the water all the time. We've added a small water slide for the kiddies.

Fishing
Fishing is great on the pier, especially for the little ones. Lotsa croakers and piggies for the kids to catch. Best bait is fresh or frozen dead shrimp. Fishing is better later in the afternoon after the boat and jet ski traffic has slowed down.

Feeding the birds
Another great activity for the little ones. They just love watching the seagulls swoop down for scraps of bread or stale crackers.

Birdwatching
There is an elevated birdwatching platform on the Galveston Bay Foundation property across 103rd St. Its a short walk from Skipper. Shore birds, waders, and other marshland birds are abundant out there. Best watching is later in the afternoon toward sunset. Bring your binoculars and mosquito repellant.

Please make sure to RSVP from the Calendar to let me know if you are coming and how many people you are bringing with you. I'll need this information when purchasing the food for this day.

Man, I really want to do this. Living out here in the country, I have absolutely no reefing friends and would like to meet some new folks in the hobby. Aside from that, I've always wanted to do some collecting. Even if I don't keep anything, I'd love to see what we can find on our coast. A couple of years ago, I found some washed-ashore tricolor anemones in Matagorda. I kept them for over a year. Pretty cool!

Same here. I'll probably catch and release but it's going to be fun anyway! Unless someone else wants what I catch. :D

Sorry you can't make it Mike. Maybe if we get lucky, Steve will pull rocks up from the water by his yard and we can do a little collecting there as well :).

Please photograph everything collected.

MARSH should start building a data time table with reference to: date, location, species and number collected/released.

Not a bad idea Brian. Maybe one of our resident photographers will bring a camera to get some good pics.
