Just want to remind everyone that if you haven't seen the news that we will be having some colds days this week so make sure your heaters are working and if you can, always have an emergency heater in stock you never know.

Thanks for reminding us. I too had turn down my heaters because the last two evenings when I have gotten home from work the tank temp has been over 82degrees.
I have also heard about severe power outages to be expected where can you get those back up systems to keep the tank pumps/filters going. Not the little ones that you can buy at Walmart or Academy?

You can get a 6500watt generator from walmart, itll run everything on your tank. I have two, one for the tank and one for the rest of the family.

Battery because we can't have gasoline inside the apartment. I have heard about those back up systems that servers (for computors) are on but I am not sure where you can buy them at.

There not forecasting us to lose power here are they?

I think the main problem is wind. We MAY get winter precipitation on Friday, but if we do, it shouldn't be bad.

Not sure. However we did have one here at the office for 4 hours this morning.... But they now have the power back on.
I do know that those little battery back ups work great on Freshwater because I had to set up 4 to 6 of them on the 55gal that I use to have a Albino Channel Catfish in during Ike and the power was out for 8 hours for us. Later I donated him to the Downtown Aquarium but was later bitten by an Allegator and they could not save him.....

i dont know how long one of those apc back ups would work for a tank i guess a decent amount of time if you were only running the heater and a pump.

i need to pick up a deep cycle battery and a power inverter i figure one of those would last me days before it died running just the basics

The UPS batteries will only run a small powerhead for a while, unless you get a really expensive one. I've used a power inverter that I can attach to the battery in my car on our tanks during Ike and it worked out pretty well. I could power the pumps, powerheads, basically everything but the lights on mine if I wanted to. It was like $40 at Walmart for one with two outlets. But then you have to have a good car battery, extension cords, etc. I would run the car a little while every couple of hours to recharge the battery. If you park pretty close to your apartment, it might be an option.

Assuming we don't lose power, do we really need a heater on the tank, with the heat on in the house, set on 74-75? I keep my light on the fuge at night and use a MH during the day, my temps stay around 78 most of the time, I've never seen it drop below 72 or 74. Course, my tank is small, so....YMMV
