It has been a long time since my last post. I had a large dieoff of fish due to what I believe was velvet and during the same time period I started having issues with my coral being irritated. I tried different approaches to turn around what was going wrong in my tank as advised by my LFS but nothing seemed to take away the irritation the corals were experiencing. Even thought I was doing proper water changes I was experiencing algae growth and over a period of around three months the majority of my corals perished including my three sherman anemones. Another member on marsh came to my house and took what remained of my livestock. Everything was surprisingly great in the beginning for me but the end has been very frustrating. I put quite a bit of money and time into this hobby and I'm not quite ready to completely quit. I am considering selling or trading my equipment and starting a smaller tank which I believe may not be quite are demanding(meaning smaller water changes). I'm thinking something around a 20 to 30 gallon all in one tank and keep it easy softies only. Any thoughts?

The most common mistake I think people make is I can keep one more fish or that this is a hobby I can cheat in maintenance.
The bigger the volume the more forgiving your tank will be. If your going to be successful long term you must check your
parameters weekly with good test kits. Basically your looking at 30 minutes to check all. If you want sps some thinks like alk
you may need to check more often. The problem with things dying they tend to take everything else down with them. If you
had velvet I feel your pain have lost thousands because of that several times now. While I think quarantines are great its not
very cost effective to some. Its always that one more fish that is sick and wipes you out. Water changes I feel are more better
if you do a small one every week instead of 1 large one. Less shock to your system and if a mistake is made the mistake is smaller.

Steve i had a 90 gallon display and my sump held about 30 gallons. Reeftopia I agree weekly water changes are better. I could not find an issue with my parameters and neither could my LFS. I'm thinking a smaller tank so the weekly water changes will be smaller changes and not so time consuming.

5 gals a week is what I would do. 2, 5 gal buckets 1 for drain one for premade mix. Would be glad to check your parameters for you most LFS
don't do a thorough check. Wouldn't keep anymore than 6 fish in your system.

Thank you for the offer but all my livestock and liverock has been removed and I'm in the process of breaking it down.

My sump had 3 chambers. First chamber was a curve 7 skimmer and filter sock. Second chamber was live rock and a marine pure block. Third chamber was the return pump. I had a manifold which ran a phosphate reactor.

Lynn from Scarbourough Do not just give up. I have a 125 and no sump and my fish last forever. Get hardy Tangs (yellow and dori) and anyone can keep hardy damsels. I am now trying to get the corals that last forever. Bubbles mushrooms stars and other stuff. I do 1 ~ 10% water change a month and that is just for the corals not for the fish. I hate money pitts.
