This afternoon I received a call from a freind that recently setup a tank. This person's cycle is almost complete and has some beginner softies and a cleanup crew. Well, it is time for the first water change. The phone conversation went something like this....

Cell......Ring-ading-ding-dingy-dong

Me......."Hello"

Caller.."Um, am I supposed to mix the salt outside the tank"?

Me......."Yes, you didn't mix it inside the tank did you"?

Caller.."Yes, well, that is what we did when we first setup the tank......but then again....um, I suppose there was nothing alive in there at the time".

Me......"Oh my GOD!! Did you like, drain out some water then put fresh in, etc., etc."?

Caller.."Yeah, I drained 5 gallons, Then added 5 gallons of distilled, then added a couple cups of salt to the tank. :) But everything closed up and doesn't look happy".

Me......"I'm giving you 2 hours to post this on MARSH or I will. That way everyone can have a laugh".

The good news is that it appears everything is OK, Nothing died....

In his defense, the guy that originally helped him setup the tank did water changes that way. But it was a fish-only tank.

Now I understand why those fish looked like they had been through hell.

Wow, people need to read more. Not speaking of your friend but the person who first showed him the ropes. That could have been really bad, glad he got that mistake out of the way now.

Before I found MARSH.
Before I knew what salinity was.
Before I knew how low our government could sink.

I owned a green spotted puffer. He came in his own little 5 gallon tank.

Well after hearing from the guy that I was supposed to change his water out, I went & bought a bag of salt and mixed it with tap water & filled up the 5 gallon tank(the puffer was in a holding container).

Before I dumped him in, I decided to do a little puffer research on www.thepufferforum.com.

I posted pictures of my proud little setup.

Luckily I received a reply before I dunked him.

Yes that is amazing in this day and age with so much information readily available. When I was into saltwater fish back in the late 80's and early 90's very little info was available online except in places like compuserve forums....

At least he did the right thing and called someone with expertise.

Hopefully Robert can get him to at least join as a guest and I bet now that he has called once he will call again. :)

The funniest saltwater critter incident that I ever heard was from a Real Estate client. This couple had a pool. They told us it was a saltwater pool. Then the guy said, "But I think it is not like the sea, because we had bought several lobsters and decided to keep them in the pool until the next day. But they were all dead the next morning..." It was all I could do to keep a straight face.
