I am trying to go collect some critters at Galveston who knows some good spots to go to? or who might be going in the next couple of weeks or so to collect?

Little early…but across from Academy is my go to.

Way to cold for any cool fish or peppermint shrimp.

You might get some blennies or skilletfish but that would be about it.

Summer is a much better time July-September would be the best months.

Im planning a trip down to do some collecting probably around end of April, mid-May and then again in July. There is a jetty that is a popular spot, but I will probably head to the marshy area near where Chris was trying to protect the sea grass. My wrasse love to get treated to the glass shrimp. Peps are probably better found on/near the jetty and im going to need to make a trip there as well. Hopefully the club will be able to get a collection trip and bbq planned for this summer after a long pandemic hiatus and we can all hit some of the usual spots and do some night collecting as well. Would love to go down when the sargassum is in.

I found at least 50 peps last January at San Luis County Park but you are correct that summer time make for a more comfortable collecting trip.

Peps are in and out all year. Even in the summer. I find they come in a lot more with clear water.

Yes I heard that you can find sargassum frog fish as well, I would love to find one. Im looking for some sergeant majors but have no clue where to look. Im planning to go at the end of April also, we should plan something!

Yes I heard that you can find sargassum frog fish as well, I would love to find one. Im looking for some sergeant majors but have no clue where to look. Im planning to go at the end of April also, we should plan something!

Sargassum also brings in seahorses.

Yeah, once it gets warmer they come in pretty thick usually closer to June, July, August. Anywhere on the coast. Galveston or Surfside are my go to spots.

Just FYI…they get fairly big…are very fast swimmers, and are aggressive with feeding usually are the first ones to eat all the food. Did I mention they’re hard as heck to catch!

Net them at night. You’ll need to put a vinyl border around the ring of the net so it’s not torn up.

This is the spot for pepermint shrimps. Head out there after sundown. For best results you need a flat topped 5' long handled mesh net. You can use a flashlight and shine between the rocks and can see the little red reflection of thier eyes and scoop them up. Just be careful with the rocks as they have sharp shells and are slippery. Add a boarder to the edge if the net to extend the mesh netting life like ReefaHolic suggested.

Reef knows all about it! He showed me how years ago when I happen to meet him there by chance the first time I tried collecting.

I havent heard of sargassum coming in large quantities in years. When the surf is full there is a ton of creatures. When its thin that allows the fish to pick all the goodies off.
