All the posts I found in search seem to be April to June. Is there a reason for that?

I’m thinking of going hunting Wednesday the 11th in Galveston. Am I likely to find anything this time of year? Where is a good place to hunt? How do I find @Reefahholic youtube video regarding this subject? How can I identify other creatures that may be reef friendly?

who would like to join if I find info saying this is a good time of year?

Anytime the surf is flat in the summer is a good time to go. Check the surf cams in Galveston or any surf forecast site before you make the drive.

Best places are any of the rock groins along the seawall or the jetties in Galveston or Surfside down by freeport.

Ive caught lots of peppermints, molly miller blennys, sargent majors, sea horses and pipe fish, file fish, and post larval forms off offshore fish like jacks, snapper and one time a even a barracuda.

Molly Millers and Sargent Majors are pretty reef safe, file fish would be a gamble depending on the species.

Palacious is a protected bay system a few miles south of oyster lake in South Matagorda Bay Area. So long as I find rocks, I would assume that would be as good as any, correct? It’s 2 hours closer to me so I could go more often.

Ive never caught peppermint shrimp in the bay, always beachfront.

Not saying its not possible, but two semesters of intensive field collecting at TAMUG and never encountered one in my classes. You can catch some pretty cool gobies in the bay, and pipe fish and sea horses are not uncommon especially if there is sea grass around.

If you could manage to get on the jetties off Port o Connor or get to Port A and go to those jetties you would catch some cool stuff.

I haven’t either. They always seem to be at the jetties in the hotter summer months. August is a great month for peps. Plenty of northern native white shrimp though.

Guys, make sure you get a Texas fishing license and saltwater stamp and understand the regulations. None of those fish are game fish but there are some weird rules on shrimp in the bays certain times of the year. Yeah I doubt most table shrimp are peppermint shrimp but make sure you know the regs in case you are stopped. I know you are not fishing but if you are taking fish from public waters that is considered fishing and falls under Texas regulations. Texas fishing/hunting licenses are licensed from Sept 1st to Aug 30 year to year but if the 2022 licenses go on sale any day now and it should cover you. Otherwise you can get a temporary license that is good for a few days...do not recall the exact number.

You’ll need to wrap the wire ring on the net with rubber tubing. You can use tubing at Lowe’s (what I prefer now) or a bicycle tube.

Make sure to do this ahead of time as it takes a little time to do it, but it will save your net for a full season most of the time. If you don’t wrap it…it will be toast after the first trip.

Also, bring a headlamp AND a good LED flashlight. You’ll thank me later.
