Last months electricty bill in my 2200 sqft house was $185.

Not being funny, but which provider are you with? My electricity bill for a 2600 sq. ft. house last month was $360!!!

Also, I have yet to set up my tank!

No kidding... I'm glad someone else picked up on that! I have a ~1100 sq ft townhome and my last two months have hovered right around $300!! Granted, it is older (built in 70's) and I have some areas where I need to upgrade efficiency (insulation and windows, etc.) when funds and time allow. Currently, I run a 250w halide and a pair of 54w t5's for about 7 hours daily (two separate tanks) and various pumps 24/7, but when summer hit my electric bill nearly doubled!

I use gexa and its about 9cents a kwhr. I have a newer home built 5 years ago, so its pretty energy efficient. There are a couple little things I need to do since I do feel the warm air coming through a crack in the back door, and I am also wanting to put in solar screens. Here are some of the statistics on my system also 2x250w for 7.5 hrs 2x110w VHO for 10 hrs. 2x vortech mp40s, skimmer, ca reactor all run by a reefkeeper. House is kept anywhere between 76 and 78. Ceiling fans are on 24/7 in 3 of the rooms, and the energy cost would be lower but I keep the TV in the bedroom on 24 hrs a day for the cats and I cant sleep when its too quiet in the house, yeah I know I am wierd. My last house was an electricity sponge, I lived in an 800sqft beach house 12 feet off the ground and my monthly electric bill was 500-600 a month. The insulation was nonexistant. I think the key to keeping the electric low is the effective cooling of the house, open floor plans, non carpet flooring, using CFL or LED lights throughout the house, Balanced A/C system(this gets overlooked all the time, where the loads are completely off in the house, should only be a 2-3 degree difference from room to room). My g/fs parents house was built about the same time ours was, they put solar screens on their house, every window just not the sunny side of the house, french shutters and keep their ac at 75 and their bill is lower than mine. Plus she is OCD and cleans 24/7.

I run only 4 t5's and a MAG9 pump and NAC5 skimmer. 9-10' ceilings in every area of the house but entryway and living room which I think are 22', 5 ceiling fans 24/7, blinds closed 24/7, four bedrooms, two kids and a wife that don't know how to shut lights off. Built in 98' all 2" blinds, carpet up and wood floors down. CFL bulbs in every room but 2.5 bathrooms. 8.? Kwhr I beleave.

Additionally, all windows in our place face East and West with the largest window in the house facing West so the living room (where both tanks are) gets blasted with the setting sun daily. We are hoping to install a pergola or patio cover in the not too distant future to help with this. The house also has storm shutters on all windows (purchased that way) and we leave the shutter on the big window closed 100% of the time since summer arrived...

Yes, I have been either too busy or just lazy to check out powertochoose and shop better options... We are curretly with Reliant; been in the house for only 9 months and this is who we set up with. Also have a wife who cannot stand to be hot so she keeps the 'stat at 77 (this is after I had to talk her up from 75 & 76), but since she is 6 months pregnant I don't fight her TOO much - lol. I do not know what I am paying per kw as I just have not taken the time to research this, or better options, but it is something I need to do. Fall cannot come quick enough!... But please bring the rain!

You definitely need to reconsider your provider or get some insulation in your house. 3300 sq foot home was $225 in July. We keep the downstairs at 78, the bonus room upstairs stays at 85 if no one is using it, and the master bedroom goes to 85 during the day, and 68 at night. I think zoning really helps also, that way your not cooling rooms your not in. We have 3 zones for our house.

I think reliant is just about the most expensive there is.

If you have a newer house with double pane windows, I've heard it is not recommended that you get solar screens because whatever heat that gets through is bounced back and forth between the windows and the screens. And if you have any warranty on the windows, it is void if you use solar screens. Just something to check up on.

Our house is 3400sf and I just paid the electric bill at $535. But I keep it around 73-74 in the house.

Um, I think we are way off topic....;-)

I wish his new tank would come in, I'm ready to start on the 135. We'll have to teardown his 135 and clean up some bubble algae on some rocks in the process of putting up his new 135.

Robert, could be your LEDs man.
If I get a bill that major, I'm gonna shut down the reef. I'm with champion, my last month bill was $148 with 2-400 watt MH and AC is set on 78 (two units)

Chris, GL with the build man.

Thanks, if I don't change my mind about the whole deal. He wants $200 for the tank and HOB overflow, decent size chip on the edge of front glass. The more I sit and think about it, the more I'd rather let my 72 grow out, but I also like having a project.

My mind changes daily, I need bigger due to my livestock, all I have to do is carry the tank across the street. Negatives are the 3/4" chip that really isn't noticeable and I'd have to get better lighting, which can be done soon after I get it all set-up.

I now have four Tangs that have started to play chase a lot and are getting scrapped up a little on the rocks. and I don't think $200 is too bad for the tank. I can leave my 72 up until I get all the lighting and everything.

I guess I'll go ahead and get it with all that being said, would a 55 gallon DIY sump be a good size?

I use smaller on my 110g, maybe 30g with 15 gallons of actual water in it and mine is a full blown Sps tank, I think i have about 46 different sps, not including sps frags of larger colonies and the Rare LPS and 8 fish, from everything from frags to colonies. So with that being said I think your more than good with 55g

My 110 had a 30ish gallon sump on it with about 20 gallons in it. Never had issues.

Get the tank, even if you dont set it up right away, you will have it when you are ready.

Nah, I'm only running 2 LED tanks and I'm still running MH and VHO because I haven't switched them yet. But I think it is because I like the house cold. There is a big difference running the house at 73 versus 78. Plus we have all of the indoor lights on most of the time and full floodlights outside at night. 5 TV's don't help either. We are carbon footprint pigs....I don't know how y'all can stand 78.

Alright cool, I'll see whats available when it come time, hopefully a Petco $1 gallon sale. When I have the tank at my house, I'll then size it up for the stand and sump, would like to build the stand with a door on atleast one end so that I can slide the sump thru.
