I hate it when I get stn for no explainable reason. Wish I could figure this out. Just venting.

STN from the base?
. Mostly, though today a previously unaffected stag started on the tip of a branch. I thought I had beat it through water changes and carbon addition. But then I noticed new necrosis on that stag, hence the grrr.

Any suggestions welcome, basically have turned over water volume through water changes, added carbon to help if it's a foreign chem prob, frag some to try and save. This started though nothing had changed in my system. It is affecting about 1/3 of my acros, no other corals involved including other sps.

What is the color like? Sounds like an alk problem. How old are your tests and what are you using?

. Color of the necrosis is white. I thought alk as well, and it well could be that. With my dosing pumps it has been rock steady for about 6 months, well dosing container ran dry unnoticed. It dropped 2 dkh. It has been restabilized and I was hoping for a reversal, been about two weeks.

Before dosing pumps my dkh would easily swing 2 dkh routinely with no ill effect. I suppose my corals have become pampered now and throw tantrums with small changes.

It can take some time to bounce back. Just keep the alk steady and it should stop soon. I'm guessing you normally run your alk around 8 or 9? If so, dropping 2dKH will definitely cause STN. Usually a swing like that will cause it period.

Good assumption. Hopefully it does bounce back. Thanks, you have helped convince me it was alk. Wasn't previously convinced because I have had these kinds of swings in the past with no I'll effect, guess my luck ran out! I need to set up some kind of alert or reminder to check my dosing containers.

I'm building an ATO container with a float switch in the bottom to wire in a buzzer. Should be able to do the same with a dosing container.

Yeah, would have to get larger opening containers. Currently using two gallon containers, one alk, one cal. Trying to come up with a smart way to use the apex for this. I know they have wet sensors, I wonder if they have dry sensors. Maybe set them on a scale and go by weight, hmm.

You could get a regulated 10v power supply and a float switch. When the switch is activated or deactivated it could trigger the apex. I think the apex has 10v signals.

I haven't personally done it, but use a float switch installed upside down.
. Yeah, float switch would work great. Problem is fitting one inside the containers I have, about a 1" diameter opening. Considering the recent events, new containers are in order.

So frustrating. Stn still hasn't stopped, I thought for a bit maybe it had but nope. Everything test fine, done the water changes, running carbon. Heart breaking to watch my acros die slowly one by one, and not know why. And it is very slow stn. Can anyone think of something outside the norm that might be causing this?

The curse of TOTM?!

It isn't the curse of TOTM... It's the test of TOTM. When you get it, they secretly poison your tank to see if you can rebuild what you already did. They have to make sure it wasn't a fluke you know =P

I'm definitely jk by the way. You had a very beautiful tank and im sorry for the losses =(

Also, sorry i couldn't be any real help.
