here is my understanding:

Remote Ballast - PFO style ballast that looks like a huge silver brick...has ballast(s) mounted inside the silver case (acts as heat sink) and has the power cords on/off switches and quick disconnects on the silver case. Useful because you can place th ballast away from your tank to cut down on heat as well as accidental spills. Not useful because they do get hot and they are not as efficient when it comes to electricity.

E-Ballast - Electronic Ballast smaller more efficient ballast that can light all bulbs rated for that ballast. Say it is a 175 Electronic Ballast then it can light 175 watt mogul bulbs as well as 175 DE bulbs etc...

I think that is correct. If not someone please correct me :)

Well normally, the E-ballast will say if it can do HQI bulbs, but besides that fact, yeah, you basicly got it right. Remote is heavy for it is magnetic, where the E-ballast is light enough to put in the hood, you don't have to put it in the hood if you don't want, just light enough to.

Of course I could be wrong, since I have only read the ordering forms, not actually had them in my hand yet.
