over the labor day weekend i was going to be going up to Lake texoma. I have just heard that the lake is closed due to blue green algae.

a quick search says that is is a cyanobacteria that thrives in conditions with high phosphates and nitrogen, low current and high temperature and is photosynthetic. there is all of this talk about it releasing toxins if the cells are disturbed and they are actually closing lakes because it is unsafe. i along with many others just reach in and grab the stuff out of our tanks to get it out of there, how safe is that?

Is this the same bluish green cyano that i have very rarely seen in my tank? are the characteristics any different that the red cyano that pops up more in saltwater tanks?

blue/green is a strain that only grows in freshwater. They are pretty similar except the red one that goes in saltwater tends to be more slimy and can be easily removed. While the blue/green cyano had to be scrubbed off like ggs.
