Ok short story, I bought a pair of clownfish from a LFS, great store, I buy everything from them, no issues. My problem is now I have ick and fin rot and they are not looking so good. I also have four more pairs of clownfish that are now showing signs of fin rot and ick. They are also starting to rapidly breath. I am lost in what to do. I pulled first pair and put in a separate 10g and used tank water and hob filter. I have one looking good again, but one is getting there. What am I going to do with all these fish to get them better. I don't have no more tans and I don't even know if I am doing it right in the other one. Please anyone that can help me with my problem. Thanks

Sound like you have ammonia/nitrite in the tank. How long has the tank been running? Has it fully cycled? Fish don't usually get sick if water is good.

Started with me putting last pair into my nano that was done cycling, that tank was 5 weeks old. They were almost dead white in color dead, I scooped them and pit in my display tank. This tank has been going for a good year. I have all the fish separated. Fishes bounced back, but showed white spots on them the next day. So I went and bought a hob filter, cupramine, stability, and microBacter7. I moved the two with the spots into tank and began the cupramine dose according to the bottle. Fish got better, pale in color but better. Then noticed female, her tale was rotting off. Went by store and got formalin aka quick cure. Did 50% water change and added quick cure. Used for two days female started acting really weird trying to jump out, did anothet 50% water change the next morning. I did quick cure one more time. Male is in great shape female getting good tale stopped rotting. Now I look in my main tank this morning and two pair have white dots and one pair tale is starting to rot. Parameters ate good in main tank all at zero.

Add air stone in tank if using medication. Most fish don't like medication. It only adds stress and kill them faster. I would use a good test kit to test ammonia and nitrite, something is not right in water which stresses the fish and causese it to sickness.

Honestly, I would stop any formalin treatment as soon as possible, I have always followed the directions on the bottle, but with half the dose.... Lost three different fish using formalin treatments... I will never trust that stuff again.
I had a clown with black spot, and simply left it in the tank, never disturbed it, fed it well and gave him his space, he recovered all by himself after a month or so.
Not saying black spot is in anyway comparable, just saying in my experience giving the fish a chance to recover in quiet, calm environment worked better than any chemical treatments.
Hope this didn't come off as dogmatic and stern, my experience with formalin has just made me dead set against it

If you do continue the formalin, keep a very close eye on your fish's breathing... The INSTANT he starts panting any harder, get him out of that stuff!

Tail rot is a bacterial infection. Quick cure with its formalin can be rough on fish and is not the best route here. You need to pull all fish showing symptoms, put them in quarantine and treat them with maracyn two for saltwater. Make sure you get the right med as there are multiple kinds of maracyn out there.

Update Day 1:
Fish have been acclimated and moved into QT. The B&W pair has been separated as the amount of damage to the tail is severe enough to warrant complete isolation. QT system has half dose of Hydroplex and will receive another dose tomorrow. I will also attempt to feed them medicated Dr. G's and pellets I have personally medicated. Fingers crossed Shane.

Cheers

Nice Brian, I will second Cat's statement about formalin. I have used that Rid-Ich + with formalin in QT before and it is hard on the fish. It's one of those where the medicine is as likely to kill the fish as the parasite. Did some research on this in the past and this is a variant of formaldehyde, not the best route. I recommend cupramine and prazipro, both are much gentler. Plus you can remove cupramine with carbon so don't have to be as paranoid about cross contamination from nets or whatever as with other copper treatments.

Update Day 2:

Mortality

With the stress of the catch/move, a new tank and new meds we lost a few by midnight. I placed the dead in fresh water to see if any worms or other items would emerge - nothing after 12 hours.

Today I elected to euthanize 2 of the clowns as their downward spiral was definite. The rapid spread of tail rot within the fish followed with rapid breathing, lethargic nature and zero interest in live (any) food is why I decided to take this humane action. I have spoken with breeders and it was suggested we euthanize the whole lot as viable offspring is questionable when you consider the time and care put in to breeding.

As a fellow clown nut and one time hopeful breeder, I will take it upon myself to replace the 2 that were euthanize.

Shane, as I stated in the email update - if you must place blame, chalk it off as bad luck. I can not believe anyone would knowingly pass on an infected fish.

We will get your system rebuilt, replenished and restocked with equally impressive fish, when ready.

Cheers
Brian

Wow, that's some highly respectful action. Really sorry you had to elect to euthanize, i cant imagine the decision is any easier with fish than with a beloved dog or cat. Replacing fish at your own expense to fix the errors of another vendor is ULTIMATE service. Just another reason to respect and admire the brilliant members of this community
