Ok, I spent all day today replumbing my tank with a Mak4 pump I had bought used.
I had never tested it and have never seen another one, so I don't know what it should sound like.
All I know is this one is Loud, Too loud to have in my living room.

What do I do?
Replace it?
What is an external pump that is quiet and can pump 1000gph?
I am in a bind now.
This pump has a 3/4" inlet and outlet.
It has a fan for cooling and I think the fan is what is making too much noise.
Right now I feel like I'm up Poo Creek without a paddle.

mags run hot too, especially if you get up to mag9 or higher.

I read somewhere that it is not recommended to run mag 9 or higher externally.

Problem is I can't afford to do that.

Now I feel like I'm out the $75 that I spent on this mak4.

I can't really sell it to someone like this....
Feel like I got the shaft from the guy I bought it from.

You could try the Dolphin pumps that Mr. limpet is using on his 75g project. Very reasonably priced and from what his post says on his project he says they are very quiet. He was getting his from marine depot but I also found them on ebay for about $10 cheaper, Not sure if any lfs carry these pumps. I cant remember the model number but I think it is a dolphin 1200 which is good for 1200gph. his post is in the DIY and has a link to his site dedicated to this project check that out.

Well I will open my DIY 75 project to the group. While I have a little bit more to update, the site reflects where I'm at in the project. My site is also still in the works, but usable.

I'm using the dolphin 1200 and 800. They are very quiet and after three days running they barely feel warm. They are Internal/External pumps. with the lack of heat from them, I'd even use them internally without worrying. The only thing about them loudish is the vibration, I think a cheap mouse pad will fix it.

I've been using a mag9 internally and was switching to external pump today.

I prefer external so I don't waste space in my sump.

I also need to get this going because I owe the mag 9 to someone.

I need to figure out a solution tomorrow.
I wanted this done tonight but since every where is closed now, I don't have much choice.

How about building a box and packing it with soundproof foam? Put the pump in there and run the tubing/plumbing out through a couple of holes. You can buy the foam at Home Depot.

I had a mak once, but now I use Iwaki pumps as they are quiet and powerful.

I'm concerned that something is wrong with it, since it's so noisy.

I thought about trying what you said though, and my fear there is trapping too much heat inside.

Nah, Mak4's are just loud, it's the fan for the most part.

I bet you could put some vents in the back of the box for the fan w/o increasing the noise too much.

Cheers

Tried finding some foam that would work @ Home Depot, couldn't find any, and nobody there was any help.
The only thing they could point me too was Home Insulation and expanding foam in a spray can.

home depot has the sheets of styrafoam if that would work...not sure....they are just styrafoam covered with a paper coating....back near the building materials....just a thought...

I have a Mag 18 that I run external with absolutly no heat problems. I did have to fix the O-ring a while back but other than that it is a fantastic pump. Very quiet with lots of volume.
