I need help with my sump, I have a middle chamber that I want to use for my refugium but the the skimmer I have does fit in the chamber where the water come out from the sock, would it matter if I place my cheato algue next to the filter sock chamber and place my skimmer were I want to use for a refugium?

The order does not really matter. You will have people that say the skimmer should be first because it will see more detritis. Also you have people that say the fuge should be last so if there are any copepods they wont get sucked up into the skimmer. However, there are plenty of people doing it the other direction.
To me the biggest issue you could have is the fuge light spillage onto the skimmer and other sections where it will create algae. If that is not a big deal to you then do it. I really like refugiums mainly because of the extra biosphere more than anything else.

I can always put a black out plexiglass around the fuge light so it won't spread over the other chambers right

Post a pic of your current sump so that I can get a better understanding of what you have versus what you want and I’m sure I can coach you through it.

That is a BIG skimmer! What size tank do you have?

I've run refugiums with the skimmer first or second and like mentioned above it doesn't really matter. What matters is flow through the refugium so that it gets to filter & for a place for pods etc to live. I've seen set-ups with a return in the middle and drains flowing into left & right side; 1 though a skimmer 1 through a fuge.

I have ran it both ways and I personally prefer running the skimmer before the fuge. Whether it's true or not, I like to think of it as the fuge is "refreshing" the water right before it goes back into the tank. I would rather put as much nutrients back into my water as possible. Let the skimmer do its job and skim out all the gunk, but then allow the water a chance to carry any beneficial nutrients it can pick up running thru the fuge before it goes back to your tank.

My fuge contains LR rubble, miracle mud, 4 different types of macroalgae, and pods. Not alot of folks like the miracle mud, but I really see the benefit when I have used it to when I haven't.

Whichever you way you go, do what you feel is best for you. You may want to try and put in a larger sump if you can (the bigger the better), there are some nice ATO reservoir's out there that can fit nicely and look pleasing to the eye next to your tank/cabinet to help you free up space inside of it so you can fit a larger sump.

Keep us posted and post lots of pics!
