Hello All,

Took the kids out this afternoon to do a little collecting. We found a bunch of hermit crabs, and kept about 6 of the smallest (dime size or smaller) to add to our new 20g Galveston Biotope tank. I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the local hermit crabs vs. the scarlett, blue leg, etc. usually found in stores? Do they get larger? I mostly have the blue legs in my reef tank, and don't really see that they get much bigger over time. Some of the ones we found were quarter-sized, so I'm thinking the little ones we kept might grow pretty quickly? Worst case, I may toss some into the sump of my 90g if they grow too quick or become too aggressive. I was hoping to find some snails and other critters, but I'm thinking it's still a bit too early yet.

And yes, I did see the collecting sticky in the Newbie forum, but was just checking to see what people thought about the hermit crabs/growth/aggressiveness.

Thanks,

Joe

They can be very aggressive and will grow large. They also tear into and eat everything they can get a hold of, including your store bought hermits. Not good for a reef tank.

Hi, Joe.
Hermits need to find larger shells to grow into. If there aren't any available then they'll just stay in their current shell till they die. But they do grow quick and big. I've seen them as big as my fist.

As far as local collecting, keep an eye on the beach water temp. When it starts getting close to 70 deg, the collecting will be better.

Good luck
Steve
