I've been keeping up with the news a little, and just wanted to send my hopes that everyone and their tanks will be okay.

Thanks, Marc! You've got enough space to house us all when Dean decides to shoot up the ship channel, right?

I picked up a 5000watt generator today, so I hope I'll be alright, but I don't that I'll stick around if it gets close (I live too close to the bay).

That should be enough power. I have a 6250 myself, and it runs everything. The nice thing is that it lasts a long time on a tank full of gas.

You probably should buy and store gas somewhere safe because if it gets bad, where can you buy it then?

I got 17 gallons... I'm hoping that should be enough for a day and a half or so. Do you keep any particular volume on hand? I expect that if I don't need it in the next couple days, I'll just dump it in the car.

Last time we had a predicted storm heading our way, I had 10g of unleaded stored. I ended up using only 5. I was without power for 17 hours straight, and I didn't have to refill the generator.

For those of you looking for a generator, PepBoys has them advertised all the time for about $259.

Yeah I need to pick up one of those generators for when we go surf fishing at the coast. :) I just hope that if people start evacuating, which I think they will, that it isn't near as bad as it was last time.

Chris, what is the brand of the generator you bought and where and the cost if you don't mind:)

that's a good price for a generator.. Wonder if it could run the main return pump, the 3/4hp chiller, one or two MH on my tank? would be nice if it could run the fridge too:)

The PepBoy generators aren't that large; not like the one I have. Mine came from Home Depot and cost $660. However, having some power is very handy for a number of reasons. A return pump and some fans care for the tank, you could plug in a laptop and find out what is going on news-wise as well as a clock radio, and a few simple lights to see.

For cooking, if your house is all electric like mine, you have the option of cooking on an outdoor grill or camping stove.

so does the one you got can run the stuffs I mention (chiller, main pump, fridge?). If i'm going to buy one, id just rather go w/ one that can support at least those equipment.
btw, I thought only me stayinng up late and watching these boards :)

Yes, mine will run everything. Tank, 56" tv, computer & all its gear, fridge, lighting, window a/c unit to fishroom.... It is a Coleman 6250, I think. I'd have to look in the garage to be sure.

I've had to use one three different times in the past couple of years, and because I had it my reef was fine.

One thing I keep saying I'll do, but haven't yet, is install outlets in my home that will wire (or plug) directly into the generator. That way I can have power without leaving doors cracked open and cords going everywhere.

With your tank, I'm surprised you don't already have one. Now that the storm is heading your way, you better run to Home Depot first thing before they are all gone.

When we had our last storm, mine wouldn't start. A guy up the street works for FEMA and has been around generators for the past 18 months due to Katrina, and he couldn't get it to start. I ran up to Home Depot at 9:15 at night, and they didn't have too many left. Heck, their store was on generators because my end of town was without power. (I think 200,000 people lost power that storm) The bigger more expensive ones were there, like mine but the smaller ones were long gone.

Two days later I took my broken one up to the store and explained that I just wanted them to fix it. I figured I'd just sell it to a club member to recoup some of my losses on the brand new one. The manager instead applied a store credit to the brand new one, so I was only out $160.

Plus $300 to fix my central a/c that got fried by the power surges.

Thanls Marc for the concern.

I'll be hauling 90% of my tank with me, if I'm told to evacuate and Dean comes toward Port A.

I plan to take all livestock, LR, equipment, ~ 1 gallon container of sand, the stand. I plan to leave just an empty tank.

I ended up with a TroyBilt from Lowes, it was around $650 (10% off for putting it on a Lowes credit card). They were flying off the shelves, so I'm not sure that you'll find one this week (5 of the 10 left were bought while I filled out the credit card app). If we get lucky this week, maybe you can shop for one soon. If you're really interested in running a bunch of stuff, you may even consider a bigger one (6200, maybe even 8000). Of if you're link hotwater9, you could just get a 17000w whole-house generator that kicks on when the powers off!

how much do you have to haul? how many lbs of rock, how many fish, etc? i'm sure that if you head out that someone with a generator might be able to hold your fish, or corals if you have them.

There wont be anybody left in Port A.

I only have a 58, so what I plan on taking will fit in the truck. Unlike Galveston, everything is basically Houses on stilts. I hope it doesn't hit here or in Texas.

I wont really pay attention to the models yet, they have been pretty much all over the place.

i just meant that if you knew someone closer to houston with a generator then maybe you could drop them off on your way out or something like that. i hope you and everyone else fish will be ok though, including mine. but hopefully it stays down in mexico or the southern tip of texas. i really don't want it coming here.

I just invested in a 5500 watt generator..got it at pepboys for around $450.00. Its hard to justify not having one considering the risk of losing over $10,000 in your tank.

Hello,

Last year I just called the local equipment shop that leases generators and reserved one with my credit card. And this was four days before Rita hit, and they still had three left. But my power was only out for about a couple hours so didn't have to us it.
