How do you frag a toadstool leather? My guess would be to just cut it in half through the top.

Also, a devil's hand leather? My guess would to be just hack a piece off and try to mount it to a piece of rubble.

Hello,

One way to frag a toadstool leather is to cut a ring of flesh off of the toadstool like a donut. Then cut the donut into pieces about 1/2" to 3/4". Sew thread (I use monofilament line) through the peices and tie them to rock or reef plugs. They should attach within two weeks. Then you can take the string off.

To frag the devils hand, cut away pieces of a size you are happy with and follow the same procedure. They might take a bit longer to attach.

Be careful of 2 things though. First, be sure to tie them snuggly so they won't move much, but if you tie them too tight, the string will cut through them. Secondly, be sure and place the parent colonies under good flow after you cut them. Leathers are prone to infection after they have been cut.

Good luck, and I'll take some of the devil's hand when you get it fragged.

Later,
Trey

For toadstools, I cut a small wedge(looks like a slice of pizza) out of the edge of the top part. Then I take the frag and place it in a small tupperware with gravel in it at the bottom of the tank. I keep it in there so that it will not get blown around the tank and can heal. After it is healed(~1 week) I use either super glue, rubberbands, or fishing line to attach it to a rock.

With the devils hand, I just cut off one of the fingers and do the same thing with it.

Usually when I'm fragging softies I'll add some extra iodine to the tank.

Garf.org had some great videos for leather corals. If I remember right, they cut off the entire top, which is then cut into at least 6 pizza slices. They recommend cutting this way to have some of the center stalk in each cutting. I have never done this before, but a lot of people on Reefcentral seem to buy into this method. I'd check out GARF, watch the videos, read the step-by-step descriptions they provide, and try it out. Oh, the stalk that is left after cutting the head of the coral will grow another head in a little bit (again, according to GARF).

I followed the instructions on Garf. Works real well. Just chop off the head, cut it into pie like pieces and let them sit in a low flow area so it can attach. The base will regrow a top, does take some time though.
