My wife is going out of town tomorrow and coming back Monday.
That gives me about 2.5 days to drain my tank, get it drilled, glue in an overflow and refill it.

Anyone know how long it takes to get Global to drill a tank?

When I talked with john about drilling my 75 he told me

Call ahead so I know you are coming and I can drill it while you wait.

If you want an overflow box installed he will need exact dimensions so he can already have it on hand. I didnt ask how far in advance he needed this info.

I was thinking about doing the overflow myself to save money.

People charge an arm and a leg for an overflow, its just a piece of acrylic.

Something else I wondered, has anyone ever tried taking a large diameter piece of PVC and cutting it down the middle into a semi circle to make an overflow?
What is the biggest PVC available @ Home Depot or Lowe's? 6 inch? If only it came in black, i'd think it would work pretty good.

Black 6" pvc would cost you way more than an overflow :) if i give you a price for one anyway.

however that is a neat idea... maybe 6" white pvc with purple pvc primer on it owuld be cool... you would most likely have to go to a plumbing supply to get 6" i think home depot only carries up to 4"

It seems like such a simple idea, the only difficult part would be making a nice straight cut on the PVC.
PVC and power saw blades don't mix very well.

Can you give me a price quote on an overflow for a 90 gallon tank? I don't know the exact height of an overflow for a standard 90 gallon.

Niko I had an idea while rearranging my tank today. The front of the overflow box is ugly :) and in another thread there is talk of attaching rock to acrylic. I dont think you would want to hook it direct to the overflow box becuse you have to take the box out to clean it from time to time. SO my idea is this -- make a sheet of acrylic that hangs down across the front of the box -- might need to start just below the comb -- not sure. But then you could slip it off and sit it down in the tank out of the way when you need to clean -- then hang it back after you are done.

Seems like it would be fairly simple to make -- flat sheet of correct size acrylic with one or two 'hangers' at the top to attach to the overflow.

If that works something simalar could be done to help hide the big ugly powerheads. They might be a little harder as you would not want to restrict water flow.

FireMarshalBill, The pvc shouldn’t be TOOOOo hard.. just set your table saw blade just as high as however thick the pipe is then set the guide so you can cut 1 half run it through then turn it over and run it through again... just don’t stand in front when you run it the 2nd time it might throw 1 piece back at you but it should still be good :) (you got pm)

highestbid, I just did basically what your talking about i made a background for a little tank i just used a piece of 1/8" acrylic and hot glued big pieces of rock to is and used PVC glue for little pieces.. seems to hold well. We could do something similar to your overflow just take a piece of acrylic and bend it around then you can glue whatever you want to it. not sure how to secure it to the overflow but im sure it wouldn’t be to hard. On your power heads you could probly just glue the rocks right to them :)
