im new at fragging, so id like the simplest way. i have a small rock with 6-8 watermelon mushrooms on it. they are getting very large for the rock and are starting to cover up each other.

how would i frag these out?

You can frag a few different ways. You can cut a circle all the way around the outside edge by just making the shroom smaller, then cut this ring into pieces. You can cut the shroom into pie shapes. All these pieces will re-grow the shroom. Hope this helps.

I just sliced mine a few times and one of the cuts led to a split. I didn't cut too much where there was no need for reglueing.

Yes, you can cut Rics up. Also, if you want to take off whole mushrooms, try this. Take the rock with shrooms out of the water upside down so the weight of the shroom makes it hang away from the rock. Now just slice it off with a razor blade. Whole new mushroom.

With Rics you want to make sure to get a piece of the mouth on all slices or they likely wont survive. Much better odds with Rics is each piece has a little bit of the mouth..

I have a beautiful purple/orange/green ricordia that has two mouths, one bigger than the other - does that mean it is going to split on its own?

Probably...at some point. I've seen them take their own sweet time! If you want to help it along you can just cut between the 2 mouths and have 2 rics!

Thanks, I might try that. That would actually give me a total of three!

Not sure if this link will work still (if so you can tell on the bottom one that it has two mouths), but I got it on eBay and since it has been in my tank, the rock is now completely purple with coralline and that red macro algae is growing great. It's a beatiful piece, the picture does it no justice!

By the way, for anyone wh hasn't used PurpleUp - it ROCKS!

I liked the note you got from bigbird 123. Steve said that there is more than one way and he is correct. I had two addittional thoughts. One would be to only frag the largest, which are inhibiting the others from growing. The second thought is how do you provide a protected area for your frags. The shrooms are pretty slippery and hard to glue. Depending on currents in the tank, I use a container with raised sides to protect from current and sand to cover bottom for the cuttings to attach too. After about two weeks, the cuts have healed and the cuttings hopefully have attached to sand grains. At this time, the cuttings can be glued and moved to a more permanat place.
Good cutting,
