ICP.png Anyone give me some insight on this? Tank is looking much better now that I'm dosing potassium iodide. Are the metals readings okay? Still learning this ICP stuff. I know that certain metals are good for the tank and others obviously are not chromium, zinc ect... I'm really not sure how i got chromium, zinc and lead in the tank...

That was 6 months ago this is my current results. I guess I'm still not dosing enough iodine. Also some elements are there that shouldn't be...

The extra stuff is probably from contaminates in salt mixes and additives. Some of them arn't the cleanest. I actually dose these heavy metals into my tanks daily as they are used by a wide range of organisms, but you do not want them detectable. I dose only enough so they are used and depleted from the tank in 24 hours. Try to find where they are coming from, stop using it and they will come down on their own. I see a few issues, like the iodine, I'd consider it depleted and need it up. Your magnesium is also low, I'd aim for a base of 1350 for a mixed reef. Some people like higher or lower depending on the coral. What all are you aiming to grow? Few other issues like high nickel. While its used by bacteria in the tank, that high might be rough on sps corals. Also have some low levels of some other things.

I’m about to start a calcium rx rather than sell it. I should be able to get my trace elements and cal alk mag from there once I get the proper media in which means I’ll no longer be dosing that. Looks like it’s time to do another icp so I can start tracking down the culprit…

Well this needs to be based off the coral and inverts, not the product recommendation. Means your corals and inverts are using more iodine than the recommendation covers and is really just basic guidelines on where to start dosing. Testing is always needed to see where to go from there.

Are you having some sort issue with your tank that you're trying to track down? Or do your corals and fish seem healthy and happy? If the later is true I'm not sure I would change anything. I did notice that your silver levels are above detectable levels though. Did you add any silver recently as some sort of antibiotic?

Just to make sure that my tank is right. I know certain things just die off for no apparent reason. The silver and chromium and nickel is what puzzles me. I know that chromium nickel and silver could come from dissolving metallic parts. I wouldn't think stainless could dissolve unless a strong acid like HCL was present. It is trace amounts PPB. But these should be non detectable right? Aluminum was listed as well....

Your latest has many of the items in PPB but compares to the right side in PPM. It would be easier to read if they kept both side the same...
Everything except your calcium looks great...I assume you already knew that.

Have you see a huge difference in your tank from supplementing those elements?

You using moonshiners?
I would say the largest difference is that I do water changes every 6 months or so to just cleanup the bottom of the tank. It’s all sps tank with good growth and color. The biggest issue I have now is that the corals rip phosphate and nitrate out of the water as fast as I can add it. Which I have never seen in all the years I have been keeping reefs until I did the Moonshiners. Now on that same coin I have gotten some bad dinos that I am having issues with that I am convinced are also being fueled by the moonshiner elements but the chemistry with it is undeniable when looking at the ICP testing that I do quarterly

That’s a good problem to have. The corals are now your filtration. Have you tried to start removing all your media and put the skimmer on a EOD timer. Maybe that will solve the issues??

You may look into some help to ID the Dino you're dealing with to find the correct path to deal with your species. A lot Dino types are becoming an issue when Nutrients are getting low.
In general I would do not dose ANY amino acids as well no Iron during the combat against Dinos of any kind. As well Calcium reactors are not helpful since they fuel many species with aqueous carbon dioxide.

Glad the Reef Moonshiner improved your Reefing life ;-)

Here a quick Video of todays Lagoon Tank after the Ostreopsis Dinoflagellate outbreak, which I had to drastically correct the tank after even losing Corals and other Livestock from it's toxins. That was the point I went back to old school methods to resolve that situation. 2 days later the tank turned back into a normal Reef Aquarium and this Video is from a few weeks later.
Lot of Corals were replaced from the losses and some others you see that look pretty rough still, are basically recovering extremely well and quickly.
Thanks to Joey Vara AKA Angryowl for "donating" mini colonies of many corals I lost to the Ostreopsis, glad my frags grew all into colonies over the last 1-1/2 years 1f609.png

I will have to release a detailed video on the Reef Moonshiner's Channel about how I eradicated so quickly the Dinoflagellates which need a detailed description for some folks.
By the way, a legit 300Gallon Waterbox tank is in the works.............. can't live without a real Tank ;-)

Colors are too intense! 🙂

Love that shallow lagoon. So easy to reach into the tank and adjust frags or sell out of.

Hurricane heading this way…looks like LA landfall, but just gonna get prepared anyway.

Ugh, looks like we might get some of it even if it does stick with LA landfall and my Generac gets installed Tuesday! The day after landfall......

I just got back from Buc-ee’s and I saw 7 other trucks filling 5-7 gas cans even this early! I just got 20/G’s of fuel for my genny and topped off my truck.
