Hi all, I am in the planning stages of putting together a small (probably about 30G) macros-only tank and would like to collect as many as I can myself. I saw in the collecting thread that people do get macroalgae from Galveston. Is there a "best" time of the year to do it? Which part of the beach is a good spot to collect? Can I just wade in to pick them or will I need so swim/dive? Sorry for the noob questions - I've lived in Houston for about a year now and haven't been down to Galveston yet. My first trip there will likely be to stock my tank so I'd like to make the most of it. Thanks!

Winter time on the east end and the bayside. Let me know when you want to go!!! I have some red macro, gracillaria(or how ever you spell it)and some narrow leaf sea lettuce if you want some? Just let me know.

Thanks so much for the offer! I'll look at lighting and flow requirements for everyone and let you know.

Led flood light bulb from h.d. 5700k and up as high wattage as they get...which is like 20watts or something like that. For flow it depends on the species but really just an decent air pump and an airstone

Since it's going to be a display tank, I was going to go with streamlined fixture like the freshwater version of the Current USA Satellite Plus PRO LED Light. The tank dimensions are about 24" x 14" x 14". I was hoping that since the light is narrow, I could do higher light plants in the back and lower light plants in the front. Would that work you think?

I think you will be fine with that fixture. You will just have to play with the macro and see how it goes. Most macro will just change color with different light intiensity... usually lighten in color.

Let me rephrase that.... It will lighten up with higher light intensity and darken up with less light intensity.

I'm going to be in Galveston this Saturday. Can I buy some small portions of macros from you?

If you are trying to keep/catch any aquatic organisms... you have to have a fishing license.

Took advantage of the unseasonably warm winter weather to head out to the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve in Galveston to look for macroalgae and found some nice, healthy pieces. One even came attached to a piece of rubble!

I'm in the process of IDing them (any help would be much appreciated!) before I add them to the tank. I flipped through the Marine Plants of the Texas Coast book by Roy Lehman but nothing concrete so far.

The white one on the bottom may be a bryozoan and not a macro algae. It has been over a decade since I had to ID any non-animal that came out of Galveston, but that looks like one to me.

The dark red one should be gracilaria.
