Is it just me or this hobby is starting to get boring? I use to be all into it for about 3+ years. I would come home from school and work on my tank then I would sit for hours staring at it. I would also go coral hunting weekly and always get excited when there was a bada$$ coral or fish. Now it's just ehh. Just feed the fish and walk away. Anyone have the same feeling? :banghead2: :banghead2: :banghead2: :banghead2: :banghead2:

Is this because of Paul's tank making you sad?

Dude,

this is going to happen. You're going to go through lulls in interest. There are times when other things are just going to take priority. I've been in this hobby for 30+ years, and yes, there have been times when I, for one reason or another, have walked away from it. It happens. Oddly enough though, I always come back to it. It doesn't mean you're fickle - you just need to bear with the lack of interest until it passes. If it doesn't, then you need to do what's right for the critters that you've become custodian to.

I think you started in this hobby too early in life. When I was in college I would burn my money on clubbing (drinking), girls, and cars. :D

I know what you mean though...I get boared with my tank once in a while.

I second that. I just got back into the hobby after 5 years away and am loving it.

You can also try starting something new, like mangrove tank, or something simple but fun to try.

Cheers

Yea I'm just maintaining the tank now. My cars seems to interest me more now. I think it's just a phase I'm going through. I would love to go diving too though.

Raymond,

I know exactly how you feel. After I won TOTM my interest in the tank took a nose dive. I stopped going to fish stores and buying new stuff. I neglected my tank a little (not enough to cause harm) and I even stopped cleaning the algae from the glass until it was completely covered. I also stopped visiting the Marsh website. Coincidentally, that’s about the same time I took up Skydiving (I think it’s the only hobby that’s more expensive than reefkeeping).

However, after about 2 months I decided to take everything out of the tank and re-arrange the rockwork. Since I changed all of the rockwork, it’s like I have a new tank. I’m fired up about the tank again. I’m buying new corals every week. I’m back to spending an hour a day on Marshreef. I think I just needed some change, you know, something to break up the monotony of looking at the same old tank every day.

I find there's always a new challenge with my tank, seems like there's always one more thing to do, try, understand, experiment with, change, etc...but I do tend to take things slow.

I've had a saltwater tank since the mid 90's and haven't become bored with it yet.

good luck, Raymond.

I think my thoughts echo just about every post in this thread, I feel fickle sometimes. What I do tend to do though is transition my interests throughout the different aspects of the hobby: Biology, chemestry, building stuff- the mechanics and physics of which, geeking out on the tech stuff like controllers etc. There's a lot to play with when a reef is your toy!

I have gone through this off and on. I think most do. I have never gotten out of the hobby in 14 years, but I have gone months without visiting a store, looking at a reef book or a website.

A few years ago at a time I was really into my tank, I set it up to be as self sufficient and automated as practical. That helped because things did not take a nose dive when I got distracted, lost interest, or other priorities called me away.

That's what I'm talking about.Last year I spent several days in a remote area in my province with family and friends......I spent almost all my time snorkelling.During high tide it's about 8' to max 10'...... until I can't swim no more (I have to crawl)cause I got caught by a low tide in the evening.
