I thought blastos were more bubbly kind of like a candy cane while acan's are more smooth? they look like acan's to me from what i have seen already. Here's an example from RM's website of an Acan:

Post it on Reef central in thier LPS area also. If you have any skeleton showing you can compare skeletons also on Reef central. Blasto's are being mistakin left and right for acan's lately. I would be very cautious of purchasing "acan" from an lfs or some-one your not sure isn't a pro at them.

Ok, let me clairfy something, that color on the right is exactly what Sherri has, and most likely the same size as she has, so the green mouths are less than half the size of dimes. The other part is something else.

Now the real kicker to tell me this is not an acan, espeically two different ones on the same rock, its 20 dollars, acans don't go for starting under 80 for a polyp if it was acan lord, which is what blasto resembles.

If you are wanting blasto, the buy now for 40 is great, don't wait on the bid to bring it up, that is if you want blasto. The purple beside it, might be acan echitata (sp?) but we don't really think so for then the whole peice should be starting bids at 120 at least. Most likely a favia.

Why don't you just ask the expert, Eric Borneman, in his own coral forum on RC?

those aren't acanthastrea of any kind. acanthastrea echinata look like a sort of tissue w/ round pock marks in them. not nearly as accentuated corallites.

acan echinata (640x480) from phishybusiness.com

that left section of the coral in question looks like it's in the family Faviidae, rather than any mussidae coral. perhaps favia.

Hi everyone,
That is my auction for the ancan. First off it's not blasto...I can tell you that for sure. As far as the price goes that is what they are selling for. there are approx 28 different species of Acanthastrea. Lordonis being the most expensive. If you all want post the picture on RC in the Acanthastrea thread and I'm sure you will get a positive ID from someone there. I'd do it but since it's my auction they might get mad.

We will go post it on RC, are you saying that both of those are Acan?

And could you id each one in what you think they are since they are surely two different species?

And also could you give us the measurements of the lenght and width and height of this peice, since we are now quite short on space.

Jimmy, there are only 15 species of Acanthastrea, max. Last I heard, there are actually 12. I'm assuming that some of the species listed are from OLD sources. Like, pre-1980s.

Acanthastrea amakusensis
Acanthastrea bowerbanki
Acanthastrea brevis
Acanthastrea echinata
Acanthastrea erythraea (now classified as Symphyllia)
Acanthastrea faviaformis
Acanthastrea hemprichii
Acanthastrea hillae
Acanthastrea ishigakiensis
Acanthastrea lordhowensis
Acanthastrea maxima
Acanthastrea minuta
Acanthastrea regularis
Acanthastrea rotundoflora
Acanthastrea subechinata

Species List based on: Veron 2000 Corals of the World; AIMS-Townsville; QLD - AUS

OK...hehe it's a $40 coral either way :)

The piece is approx 4" X 3" and the piece was sold to me as ancan so I'm assuming they both are the same coral just different colors.

I just seen the post on RC....I have to laugh. There is no recession at all on the coral it is very healthy :) BTW I was asked to get a better picture of the coral and it was taken right after I moved it (it was a little pissed). Anyway good luck to you guys/gals :)
