Well, I've always been told that everyone does it at least once in their aquarium career. Up to now my 17 years has proven them wrong. Until........

I was doing a water change last night and almost finished at 10:30. (I bet you can see where this is going). I had exchanged approximately 25g of water and had my old water in a trash can waiting to be taken outside. I have a rolling cart that it sits on and because of my own stupidity it became unbalanced and whoosh, right onto the floor. It’s amazing how fast 25g of water spreads out even on carpet.

I screamed a few things, wife came running and took it better than I thought she would (maybe she's secretly hoping for new carpet). Kids were no help (although one did get me soup cans to raise the couch off the floor so it did not get soaked.

I spent the next 2 hours trying to soak as much water into out of the carpet using towels and a wet vac. Then went to Walmart (its amazing how much activity is going on at Walmart at 11:30 on a Sunday night)
to get a few box fans and pulled up the carpet to try to dry out underneath.

As of this morning still damp but doing much better. Only time will tell if the carpet stinks or recovers. It’s a shame because we just had that carpet steam cleaned 6 months ago.

I think I'm going to use this as an opportunity to upgrade my water transfer method.

Hey make it a win win.

Tell the honey that you want to get her new carpet, but, you need to spend some cash first rigging up a better water change method. Use it as a method to do both and everyone is happy! ???

Walmart by our house is crazy from about 8 PM to 2 AM, almost nightly.
I refuse to go after 7. It's like being in a club.

You know... I was just reading the thread title, and all I could think was... "This can't be good." At least it wasn't because the tank came down with you when you lost the balance. I can see it now... Deuce Bigalo in action.

wow. sorry to hear. Just as reference, I have a maxijet 1200 pvc glued to 20' of 1/2" clear tubing from home depot. It costed a total of ~$20 for everything, but I directly shoot my old water into the sink drain(or anywhere else you need it to go).

The maxi 1200 has no problems pushing it through this 20', as long as the i'm not trying to push it 10' above ground.

Well to tell the truth that is nothing to what I thought I was going to read. I thought for sure I was going to read about a tank crash. :-o

One reason I set mine up to do all the water changes in the garage. I'm doing a 55g change as I type. 8)

With the fans and wet vac your probably in great shape with the carpet.

yea, tank crash would have been worse.

I wish my garage was as close as yours. I do have a bathroom right behind my tank wall. I may have to plumb through the wall into the drain (or at a minimum use the Maxijet/tube into the drain idea).

Thanks for all the moral support but I don't hear anyone offering to come over and vaccum tonight!

That sucks!

I have large FreshWater tanks and one night I was refilling a 135g FW and I kinda dozed off......about 60g later I wake up thinking about what I was doing so I stand up....splash!

Good thing we have tile though.

Sorry Brad, we would help if we could! At least fish and sand are still where they need to be. Trying to find something good in this... this is your first major spill in 17 years, your wife didn't have you pack your bags, could go on but I don't think that will help either. :(
Best wishes your way!

I had the same thought as Mark when I saw yyour thread... so it's not too bad there :)
Some times accidents just keep happen no matter how well our plan on working around our tanks, and it happened to me this past Saturday too.
I woke up late on Saturday to see water all over my garage and the main tank was filled with bubbles due to the low level in the sump. Found out the carbon reactor was clogged and causing the overflow... So it supposed to be a quick fix by just cleaning the carbon reactor and refill the tank w/ some pre-made saltwater.
Well then during the process of cleaning and other minor work around the tank, I kept overfill the tank, then over drain it, then over fill it, then overdrain it... So I pretty much done a 50 gal water change over a course of 3 hrs! not mentioning that I just did a regular 35 gal water change the previous night! as a result of these mistake, my dKh shoot up from ~9.5 to 12.8 when i tested the water on Sunday... luckily look like the corals are all fine and seemed to enjoyed the extra water changes:)
