One shark is dead, another is wounded at new Applebee?s aquarium in Coney Island - NY Daily News

Article said:
The new Applebee’s restaurant in Coney Island celebrates its grand opening Monday — and death is on the menu.
A Blacktip shark named Zane had to be removed Friday from the restaurant’s 5,000-gallon aquarium after devouring three Lookdown fish in a shocking killing spree.
That very same day, a Whitetip shark died after colliding with a three-foot Wonder Wheel replica in the tank, leaving employees shaken by the mayhem.

Whole article in the original link. So much of this tank just seems wrong to me. a 20 ft tank for two 3-ft sharks, mixed with a vast number of other fish (Check out some of the pictures in that article), and based on some of the pictures it doesn't even look like the tank is done cycling yet, in the second picture the water is cloudy like it's still mid-cycle. They also supposedly got the sharks directly from the ocean? What?

I know we've had discussions on "Tanked" before, but I thought we disproven some of their methods but after reading this article I just am a little frustrated and confused. A lot of those decorations just don't seem safe for sharks to begin with (hence one of them killing itself on the big ferris wheel). Or is everything fine with this setup and they've just had bad luck? Because everything I can see says this is just all wrong.

I think 20ft is large enough for sharks just not sure if its large enough for a black tip. It will outgrow the tank. Now I don't think that the look downs should have been in the same tank since they tend to swim near the top of tank where the black tip likes to swim that's just asking the shark to snack on them. I also have a hard time believing that a shark that was supposedly fed that morning decided he was still hungry for another 3 large look downs. He it could happen though. Just my 2 copper

As much as I hate to see any livestock suffer or die, I can't help but wonder if something was wrong with the shark that was killed by the decorations. They can usually avoid obstacles easily, perhaps it was sick or injured, maybe it was chased.

I don't understand why they are surprised that a shark they plucked from the ocean would eat shiny silver fish that were unable get away.

I guess it doesn't matter how much money you throw at a tank, or how many "experts" you hire, things go wrong in this hobby. Hopefully lessons were learned.

I can't help but wonder about the shark/gator tank they built. How is one side being maintained at 86 degrees and the other kept cool enough for the sharks? I like the show, but I think saying yes to all these crazy demands is not cool if it comes at the expense of the livestock. An underwater Ferris wheel? Really?

In my opinion, keeping animals that can't be domesticated is about creating the most natural environment possible. I can understand the fun and whimsy factor, but why isn't anyone telling people how much stress affects these fish? They have done a tank that included a weight lifting bar outside that pulled a weight up through the water column. Wonder how the fish feel about that.

I wish these customers would treat the tank like a tiny ecosystem with live animals who need certain requirements to survive and stop acting like they are just ornamental.
