Who has a jawfish in a shallow sand bed. I have seen Sherri's and there is a rumor that Brandon also has one in a SSB? Where can I get rubble to help the jawfish fortifiy its hole. My sand bed is between 1/2" - 1". Has anyone seen a yellow headed Jawfish at any of the LFS.

Tom,

I have two of them in my tank. The sand bed is maybe 2 inches where they burrowed. The burrowed under the rock work and have a nice cave system. You could make the rubble by taking a smaller piece of live rock, wrapping it in a towel, and then smack it with a hammer. small shells work well too. Talk to Kenny he can order them in for you...that is where I got mine. City Pets has a pair of them in their sps tank. Really cool to watch them.

SSB and jawfish

Get oyster shells from a local oysterbar (1960 W of 249) or
Galveston bayside beds. Kill the oysters (if alive), wash in
warm, soapy water, dry in sun, bleach (1/4 cup bleach in a
gallon of water) for half a day, rinse in clear waterseveral
times and let sit for a day. Dry in sun. Crush the shells with
a hammer and closelyplace vertically in the SSB. The fish
will know what to do. OR simply but a bag of crushed sea
shell from a LFS. Move some of the sand aside, place the
shell on the bottom and sift some sand on top of the shell
to fill the spaces. The fish will know what to do.

This method works well with blennies, gobies and pistol shrimp.

The SSB can be arranged so that it is 2+" in the area where
the jawfish cave is to be located. In the front corners or the
center, wherever you like.

Tom, we have 3 pearly's in ours. Our sandbed is probably closer to 3 inches though. They are the coolest and my favorite fish. Two of them have burrows side by side and it's a crack up to watch them spit sand and move the coral to suit them. They also like to close up their burrows at night when they go to bed.

At any rate we have lots of crushed coral if you'd like some.

Oh, and I just stopped by Kenny's today and he had 3 pearlys, I believe.
